Diving is a sport
A sport consists of a normal physical activity or skill carried out under a publicly agreed set of rules, and with a recreational purpose: for competition, for self-enjoyment, to attain excellence, for the development of skill, or some combination of these. The difference of purpose is what characterises sport, combined with the notion of individual (or team) skill or prowess. from http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Sport

Arguing with a mathemetician is very different from arguing with a lawyer. Mathemeticians are calculating, detail-oriented people that focus on the best solution, though they know there are several ways of reaching the same solution. Lawyers understand many solutions and argue the one solution that will achieve their goal in an argument, often drawing upon their knowledge of the other solutions.

I will argue with either and probably still remain civil with the lawyer, but will leave the mathemetician alone to ponder social skills. The lawyer will rest his case and later provide new evidence, in the meantime enjoying multiple answers and finding the best fitting answer, not just the only answer.

Scuba diving

I could just as easily make a website that said that claimed that scuba was not a sport. In short, I do not accept that the supplied website has any authority on the issue what-so-ever.

You should include the next two lines from your own reference:
"Therefore swimming competitively in front of thousands in an indoor arena is considered a sport, whereas swimming in a pool or in the sea by oneself is seen simply as a recreation. "

When you are diving competitively in front of a crowd that is there to watch you compete, then diving is a sport. Until then it is seen "simply as recreation."

You have to love the freedom of expression the web allows in a civil setting as this..... I had know idea I would foster such in-DEPTH thoughts and ideas on such a simple question as is SCUBA a sport or hobby. THANKS everyone for the interesting reading,,,,keep them coming!!

My point exactally.

will leave the mathemetician alone to ponder social skills.

Hmmm....what are you trying to say about my social skills? :wink:Darn it, if I had social skills I'd be able to figure out what what you were trying to say about me. Foiled again!

I was aware of all these issues! :)

After getting a little carried away this is my last thought.

The English language is a mess and that is what makes it so much fun. We make new words and change the definition of existing words all the time.

Is scuba a sport or a hobby? The "real" answer is that it depends on who you ask and what words THEY use. It will only be "one or the other" when 100% of the people use only 1 term for it.

In the mean time, you'll be hard pressed to find me calling it a sport!
