Craftsman makes vise grip pliers that take a soft cover. Works great.

I also used something similar prior to buying "proper" tool/s. out of all the non gauge tools I own the only two I'd rather not live without are Herman's piston O ring tool and his conshelf hp tool, all other tools I bought there are work arounds for and were not really needed, nice to have though, makes me feel like a pro (joke).
 
I found a set of o-ring tools and I thought it was on www.McMaster.com, where I get all of my o-rings. They were SS, with an oval handle and the tip end was like a half cork screw. I would like to get another set, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. They are the easiest tool to remove captured o-rings. Put the tip just above the o-ring and give a quick twist. It never fails and I never let my students near them. The angle has to be just right to not jam and break them.

Not quite, the twist was far more subtle.
