Let us know what you work out-Im sure we could muster up a group of people to take you diving and show you around!
The kelp forests are very different from FL-you will love it,but its a bit chillier..
Your non diving wife would love the area as well-lots to do and see!

H2Andy:
my wife (non-diver) and I might be in San Francisco for a few days next
summer (2006), and i was wondering what sort of shore dives are nearby,
or any shops that you guys would reccomend that put together day trips.

so far, i've looked at these sites:

any help to get me hooked up with a good dive boat would be appreciated
I'd start with Monerey just like everyone has mentioned.
But then if you really want adventure and some great times come up to one of my North Coast parties and you'll really see some good diving. That may require another trip, but if you plan it out well you could do it. We are all very friendly up here and would be more that willing to show you some diving that dwarfs anything in Monterey, especially shore diving, except for Monastery. The content of the dives is much different up here. Areas tend to have much more of a profusion of life.
But Arena Rock is still the best of the best.

Agree with everything said above (including the offer to take you diving when you visit).

For what it's worth, I often dive up here with 3mm gloves and am quite comfortable.

I'll second that. Keep your head warm and you could dive with sport gloves or even barehanded.

thanks everybody... good stuff

i will definetely give everybody a head's up when our visit gets closer,
would be great to dive withchas

Heck, I've seen you dive w/o gloves, aren't we a bunch of forgetful ones.
Maybe Andy will be here for the next (or one of ) the ScubaLaurel dives.

I don't recommend diving barehanded. I think it took a few hours for my hands to slowly change from purple to red to their normal color after that dive, though it really wasn't that bad.

And they're DOHdives - I thought we settled that already.

Being self employed, I tend to dive mid-week when it is not so crowded. Let me know if you need a mid-week buddy!

The reason there's no SF diving is that the area is part of the "red triangle." GW's frequent the area from about September to February. Also, unless you go to the Farallones, the vis is murky at best, and the currents coming out of the 'Gate can REALLY rip (5+ knots).

Monterey would be a far better choice. Let us know when the date gets closer. Some of us will throw out the welcome mat. I'll even bring extra gear in case you forget something like weights/weight belt or gloves.

A few days? Not enough time. You also don't need a boat to dive in Monterey/ Carmel. (Sorry, Pacific Grove, You're rad too.) People can dive for years without a boat dive, with just a $6 map, (and a guided orientation dive) and never set foot on a boat. I've tried all the boats, and they are terrific, but so are the shops, and their willingness to advise and direct. Most won't, however, take you to the best spots, like the members you'll meet here. Be sure to check out Pt. Lobos. Reservations required, but a gauranteed cool dive, pending vis...
