Texas Diver:
I do not have first hand exeprience with this I just read it somewhere online, so take it for what its worth.

In addition to breaking into your rental car and stealing your property - which can be easily remedied by leaving the car unlocked with nothing of value in it and a few bucks on the seat to appease the kids - they also steal the tires from your rental car and sell them back to the rental car agency, who re-installs them on the car after they charge your credit card for new tires.

Maybe you read about when it happened to me.

Nevertheless, go, dive and have fun. Bonaire should not be missed!

Thanks to everyone that replied to my post on this topic. After reading every post i could find on saftey in bonaire i think i am going to take my chances. I grew up in southwest detriot and if i caould make it through thaat then i can make it through anything. I could only find one instance of a violent crime the esperanza case and those individual are locked up. There was one other instance i read about where a house was broken into and vehicles stolen and the police found that it was the same individuals in the esperanza case. Most everything i have read about has been petty theft or people being stupid and leaving things out where they can get stolen. I have read a ton of posts that people said things like this dont happen in the U.S. I beg to differ i lived like i said in the inner city of detroit and things like that happened every night . if you dont believe me drive into one of these areas and leave a cell phone in your car where it is visible and maybe youll get lucky and have your car left. I have seen cars stripped in our neighborhood and left on cinder blocks in a matter of an hour. People shot in the middle of the day. and guns pulled on you just for knowing someone in the other street gang even if you were not involved with a gang. At 23 i moved north and got out of there but it still happens everyday. My grandma still lives in that neighborhood and on Christmas day there was someone shot down the street from her. In detroit that is a daily thing and you can hear gunshots everynight after dark when the gangs come out and play. I dont see that bonaire is taht different that any other place in the U.S. In august we were in vegas and i watched a lady getr her purse snatched. The dummy ran to the new subway and was picked up at the next station, but that stuff happens everywhere. Most people that haven't seen much of this need to look at the neighborhood their in and realize that not everyone lives in the burbs and need to understand that the outside world is much worst than they want to believe.
Im not trying to be nasty but just trrying to shed a little light on a subject that i think a lot of people are secluded from. The reason you dont see it in the news is because it happens so often that the news doesn't report it.

Thanks again for everything and if anyone will be in Bonaire from feb 26 to mar 6 let me know and maybe we can meet up and do a dive or two

well said that man- I think you have hit the nail ont he head and I totally agree. You 'll have a blast in Bonaire, it is well worth the "risk".
