Relatively new diver(17 dives), looking for a recommendation on what safety/signaling equiptment I should invest in?

My diving is usually in a vacation spot in the Atlantic, Carib or Pacific oceans,in Carib or Latin America. Always warm water and usually close to land. I have found refrences to 12 different kinds of safety devices and am unsure what to get/have??????

thanks in advance.

Safety sausage (SMB), mirror, whistle, light, chem lumn sticks, and knife are always on me for any dive in the ocean.

Be prepared. Check out Scubatoys.com for good prices.

i carry a sausage (make sure it's long enough to be seen over high waves) and a
pneumatic whistle that attaches to my inflator hose.

i also carry a knife and a pair of EMT shears as well as a flashlight.

a mirror would be nice too, but i haven't gotten around to getting one.
some people use two CD's glued back to back, but you really need
a specially-made signaling mirror. the CD's are just not very effective.

Ok-next question what do you do with all this stuff when your diving?

Is it best to get one of the safety kits the suppliers sell and use the little bag and caribiner and just attach it to your bcd somewhere?

How do you travel with a dive knife?

Put it in checked luggage?

Do you really need both a knife and shears?

knife is on my belt on a sheath

EMT shears and infaltable sausage are on a pocket on my harness

whistle is mounted to my inflator hose

most dives i don't even know that stuff is there

yup

probably not... but it's nice to have a back-up cutting instrument
in case you drop one

I have seen fish nets that take a lot of work to cut out of with a knife.also 800 ,10000 lbs fishing line with leaders. I have a shear in me long knife. Have never had to us it .

Mirror, light and chem lumn sticks in pocket of BC; knife attached to right leg, whistle attached to double-D ring on BC right top D-ring (also doubles as a tank-banger); SMB attached to lower right D-ring.

As a longer lasting alternative to glow sticks and of the same size are either the aquatech mini light stick or the well known glow tube. Both last much longer and are much brighter markers, the mini light stick comes in flashing or constant and the glow tube flashes a variety of ways as well as having a constan on function. Both come in several colors.

SMB, mirror, whisle, light always on me while diving
