Sad news: 5 beached whales on Utila

The previous post by SDSCUBA27 was not by moi, someone used my logon in the office as pointed out.

This is truly a sad event. It was determined that the Covier’s Beaked Whales (Zifius cavirostris) that beached in January died from natural causes. The samples taken from the female demonstrated symptoms of bronchial pneumonia and was apparently the cause of her death. . The pup appeared to have died from starvation.

I am not on the island at this time and have only been able to work on the pilot whale beaching via phone and email. Hopefully we will have some answers once lab and test results have been evaluated.

I have spoken with the U.S. Navy and they state that they have not been operating in the area. Your guess is as good as mine right now. WSORC will continue to stay on top of this and report our findings.
