One story says it was a girl sailing with her dad who first heard & saw him, and her dad called it in. Can't find it. Too many.

The wave story was initially reported on the cruise boards I read (so weird that only one person on the whole ship noticed this 14-18 story wave...) but now they are saying that there is video that shows he jumped.
One of the news stories said that he fell from the fifth deck. That would still be a huge wave.

I totally believe he jumped. Whether or not there is video, that seems to still be crew gossip. (However, if there is a video, it makes sense it was only found in review. Those ships have so many cameras there is no way they could all be monitored all the time.)
Only in the casinos. Some claim that these ships are supposed to have automatic MOB detectors. I've not been on one of the big barges. Aren't the rails pretty high?

Have you seen the Oasis of the Seas??? We passed right by it on our fishing boat last May. I don't think a tsunami could reach anywhere near the lowest open deck of that boat. An upper deck? Cozumel would be have been completely inundated and the boat would have sunk. Riiiiight, indeed.
The upper deck statement was incorrect. It is a monster, but there are some open decks about 5 stories above the water line. See pic below. I still don't think there have been waves that big there since H.Wilma.

The story seems to be changing. In some reports he claims to have arisen early, gone to an upper deck, and been washed off deck by a wave. Riiiiight.
"Jade states that he was up early on Thursday morning and had walked up to one of the open decks of the Oasis of the Seas. He said that a large wave ended up knocking him off of the 225,300 ton ship and into the water.

The rails on cruise ships are at least 3 1/2 feet high.

Even to the 5th deck, there was no wave. A wave that could have knocked him over board would have caused significant damage on the ship. Knocked over bottles, every chair on the pool deck sliding, people falling out of beds, etc. when you see YouTube of these destructive waves/listing people haven't gone overboard. The guy was trying to cover his ass because he jumped.

Not not sure you are saying there are only cameras in the casinos or only monitored ones. The later is probably true, but there are cameras everywhere including ones that see the outside of the ships. Cruiser boards tend to remind newbies wanting to join the balcony club that all is recorded.

A CNN article says:
Royal Caribbean closed-circuit TV video showed the man was alone on the Oasis ship Deck 5 when he went overboard at 6:07 a.m. "There were no other guests or crew around at the time," said Cynthia Martinez, a Royal Caribbean spokeswoman.

I am sure that the camera showed whether he jumped or fell but of course they are keeping that confidential.

There is NO WAY he fell over a railing unless he is 7' tall or taller. Those railings are high. Also, no waves reach anywhere near that, plus the seas just off of Cozumel are pretty calm for a cruise ship, especially at the SLOW rate they go through that channel approaching and leaving the island. The ships creep through there at a snails pace!

Also, if he fell from an UPPER deck, he would have been badly injured or killed. This guy had to have jumped in feet first from a lower deck.

With luck like that, he should have stayed in the casino. I read somewhere that less than 1% of the MOB's are found alive...much less one that nobody missed.

Here's an article about people that have fallen off of cruise ships and lived to tell the tale. I think my favorite is the drunken woman who complained that they took too long to rescue her and then sued the cruise line because the bartender had over-served her!

The person who fell overboard and was rescued in the Mississippi River was lucky as well. It's much harder to stay afloat in fresh water.

Oh my goodness! What a story!!!!!!!
