Ascend directly... implies you're ascending directly to the surface. Not indirectly to a mooring line or out of a cave.

I supposed you explained it. Directly my not actually mean directly.

I don't cave or wreck dive so directly to me meant directly to the surface; i.e., straight up.

In a narrow passage, wreck or cave, the longer hose would be important. Surfacing in a shipping channel and being 5 feet apart instead of 3 feet doesn't seem to make a lot of difference but hey, you guy's are the experts so okay!!!

I agree. What I was asking is how that prevents me from maintaining contact with my buddy ("Ascend directly... that implies you are not holding onto the other person").
