If I am diving a back plate and wing, it will be a Deep Sea Supply. The rubber grommets he uses in his back plate are GENIUS and the finish of all his products are second to none. I like the way Tobin approaches problems and the skill at which he resolves them. I almost never use one though, unless I am diving backmounted doubles.

Another vote here for DSS, especially for single tank setups. Tobin's an ingenious problem-solver, and customer service from DSS simply cannot be beat. (Be prepared, though, if you call them. Tobin won't sell you something until you give him enough information for him to be sure you are getting a product you will be happy with. It annoys some people )

+3 on DSS -- I use the Kydex plate for travel. Tobin stands behind his work.

Cave Diver...you quoted me here but unless I am missing something you did not point why I was quoted. Did something get left out or am I missing something?

Thank you all for the replies here. I find myself leaning in the direction of a BP&W due to the cold water diving I will be doing plus the stability underwater and not to forget the possibility of going Cavern/Cave someday. From the replies I have read here it just makes sense to me that a BP&W wold better suit my needs and no, this does not mean that I think a BP&W is "better" than a vest BC.

Working up with regards to your quoted post above ...

Your welcome; may each diver find "their" best. :D

Cave Diver was just "trying" to pick on me ...

:shakehead:

Considering the OP's original question, I'd say there is no big hub bub. Most "tech divers" I know are using double tanks, and as previously stated the reason for using a BPW is stability. You even said you would have used a BP/W under those circumstances.

...

The rest of your posts just highlights your bias against BP/W and really have little bearing on the original question.

Considering my post you partially quote to make this "snarky" confrontational jab included the "new questions" my post was speaking to, anyone who can follow a simple conversation can easily see that you have not been able to follow this simple conversation.

:shakehead:

Considering that this partial quote of the OP's post # 11 is the opening of my post you so "snark", my post simply follows the request of the OP.

:idk:

So, if I may be direct, why the big hub bub over which is better between the two styles of BC's and how does one go about figuring out what they want to dive with? I figure that I am a long time away from Cavern or even Intro to Cave so should I just go with a vest style BC? Just looking for opinions from veteran divers is all. Thanks.

I quoted you to re-iterate the original question, which was about the use of BPW for tech diving and to attempt to keep the thread on track. Halemano was starting to go down the track of the reasons why new divers might use one, which was not your question and starts to open up a whole new can of worms.

Yep...I missed something alright. I did not get that at all.

Moderation in this sub-forum seems to be the polar opposite of moderation in the Advanced forum; here the moderator "thinks" he is prescient, but cant follow simple conversation.

...But the OP queried about a BP&Wing for tech diving and this is decidedly Not a backplate. Forrest's conversion to the SMS100 is fairly recent though. I last dove near him a little over a year ago and he was diving what we would call a poodle jacket. :D
I still use the rig with the Jacket. I only borrowed the SMS100 for that one dive.

The low fat santa had a list and forgot to check it twice before going on a cave trip :)

You're correct. I was skimming the thread and saw your own response that you quoted, but missed the OP's quote above that, and my comment on that part of your response was out of turn. My apologies for that.

However I stick by my assessment of the rest of the comment. That's my personal opinion and I have as much right to be direct and express it as you do. That doesn't mean that I'm trying to pick on you, be snarky or that I'm acting in any sort of moderator capacity. If I was responding to your comment as a moderator I would have made it clear.
