Post bonaire depression hit me hard in oct. 2007. But I found the cure for it Oct. 2008
But now I'm stuck with this awful case of post Fiji depression.I think I've still got some kava left somewhere--it helps a little.

I haven't read the entire thread.... but Bonaire is not a big place.

The population of the entire island is not any larger than a "small town" in the US.

If the police on Bonaire really wanted to stop this petty theft/robbery/burglary (or what ever you want to call it), then they could.

This has been going on for years. I'm sure the police are paid off, or someone is. Otherwise they would put a stop to this.

If I go to Bonaire, I tell you I'm afraid to bring any camera equipment or my laptop because I'm afraid it will be stolen out of my room while I am there.... :shakehead:

Well Im returning in sept 09 but without anything of value, at least in my eyes, Bonaire spoiled me on shore diving and liberty. My own time and schedule, what could be better. Ill just have to pack alarms for all the windows and hopefully I can squeeze into the safe when sleeping so no one kidnapps(womannapps?) me while sleeping. It is a paradise colloding wioth people who live adn work on the island, a juxtapost if u will of 2 very separate lives. Its hard when u go on vacation for some R & R and ur guad is up the same as when one is back home, but that's life I guess. Change is the hardest thing for humans

That's too funny. One just lives for the bad stories, then?

No, but many are making their first trips to the Carribean, and need to be aware that crime does take place. Its not limited to the USA.

Frequent visitors to Bonaire will tell you when leaving a vehicle unattended, like during a shore dive, you should leave the windows open and the doors unlocked, so potential robbers will not smash the window - obviously, you should not leave anything in the vehicle.

Its kind of like when people question the media (:shakehead::shakehead:) "why don't you ever report GOOD news" they reply "The accident that didn't happen is not news" or words to that effect.

It can get out of hand, I'll grant you - in the Cozumel forum, there were, a few weeks ago, numerous threads about crime in Mexico - nothing to really do w/ Coz - and were people cancelling trips.

To me this was irreseponsible - I don't put this thread in the same category.

This was suppossed to be a feeler put out there. We heard and followed leave the windows down, no valuables in the car, etc. At the house we locked every window, door, rods on the tracks of the sliding doors and went to sleep, they still came in, so best advice is BRING NOTHING WITH of VALUE.
Divers are still going to go and dive in Bonaire, and since we keep going, Im one of those, then nothing will change, They feel why should they change when we keep coming

Other then this incident I still love Bonaire for the most part, except for the robbery/burgarily, stealing and the censorship of talking about it on BT (thou they are great Chaps)

And don't forget the weekly "LDS vs On Line" :rofl3:

Or the eternal Split Fins vs Paddle Fins  :thumb: :palmtree: Bob

Let's keep things real. ...Can the police on Bonaire stop the crime? Can the police in any community stop crime? Of course not. Crime prevention involves much more than just police patrols and a criminal justice system.

(Well said by a Candian...LOL...crime can be stopped in small communities...and Bonaire is a small community)

It is unfortunate ... then don't go - but you will be missing a great dive vacation. If you get stuff stolen...then your vacation can not be defined as "great" can it? I think NOT!If you go, take some precautions. (who wants to be "on guard" on your vacation the entire time...again, not fun, not a "great vacation." If you stay in a house off the beaten path, realize that your risk is greater. If you park at a secluded site, realize that your risk is greater.

It has been said before and will be said in many threads in the future - use common sense. That will not guarantee anything, but it will decrease the risk.

Yes, I have been to Bonaire - 5 times and will go back as soon as I can arrange it. The first trip was at a place off the beaten path. The sliding door had a very flimsy lock and poor site security. We did not return there. Now we only stay at newer places with proper security. It costs more, but that is life.

Okay, my rant is over.

OK...my rant is over, I'm done picking on the Canadian.

Good one

How 'bout "frog kick vs flutter"

"I want to become a DM, Instructor, etc, but I'm not yet certified"

"NITROX pro's and con's"
