That was discussed on the linked thread as I cannot drive without glasses at all. One diver mentioned that they're made to handle sweat. He carries his in a crush proof protector, then washes them with water left in the truck not considered at risk for theft. I even have a waterproof case for mine that floats, but never tested it at depth.

I think I'd pack a baseball bat for the room.

I'll just make hubby drive to the sites and I'll take dinner duty.

That would be his and hers baseball bats. Actually...he's a former Army Ranger so I think he just needs his hands :D.

One small way to alert yourself to intruders if they should get the door open is a small contact alarm that sticks on the door frame and on the door. Open the door even slightly and a loud 110 decibel alarm goes off either scaring them away or alerting you to someone coming in. We purchase these at Lowes or home Depot for every trip and put them on the doors and windows. They are like $10 for 2 or 3 and we just leave them for others to use when we leave.

Our experience is that bring nothing to the dive sites that u dont need or will miss if it is taken. An d unfortunately no matter where one stays the risk of being burgalarized is there regardless of the steps one takes to thwart thieves. We just dont bring anything of value and make every effort to stay at safe places, even that isnt safe :Liz wrote: ending to a great trip" there safe was drilled out of the wall". Bonaire is fantastic and I will return just with a different mind set. someone mentioned the the police our relatives, maybe, maybe they have the GOod Old Boys attitude, if they wanted to they could make a change, but since forums such as BT, u have to send in the police report< before discussing a crime, its easier to not discuss the issues if u ignore it. So my experience is bring less valuable so it u r hit u wont miss it. Safety is an issue but oh well

I'm not blaming the victim but I was not impacted at all by not leaving anything in the truck and leaving it unlocked. If you are silly enough to leave valuables in the truck and lock it after all of the advise dispensed against it (including the signs in the rental vehicles) then I guess I am saying you are at fault. The same way I would say you are at fault for not wearing your seatbelt even if you were hit by a drunk driver.

I live on Bonaire. I have lived on another Caribbean island. Theft in the Caribbean is a reality. Having said that, I have sent hundreds of divers to Bonaire and none have been robbed at any dive site. There are positive stories to share as well as the negatives. Peace everyone and follow your Bonaire Bliss

Every time you try to discuss the real problem here the threads get hit with those who want to hijack with the good stories. Sure it's good there, but the bad still exists seemingly because the authorities do very, very little.

That's too funny. One just lives for the bad stories, then?

I have not been back to Bonaire in eight years, primarily because the last time I went, all four members of my party (myself included) had something stolen, either from our rooms or from our vehicle (who would have thought somone would have stolen a sweaty "do-rag" from an unlocked vehicle?).

Theft is commonplace throughout the Caribbean, but I did find Bonaire to have the highest incidence, and this was eight years ago. Apparently things have not improved.

When splitting hairs between "robbery" and "burglary," it is important not to approach these definitions from too much of an Anglocentric perspective. Here in Panama, the police call all incidents of theft "robbery" even if we might consider the theft a "burglary" based on our English definitions.

Ok bottom line is, A robbery (what ever u want to call it), I took all precautions, hmm go figure, I locked the windows, doors and put a special bar in the track of the sliding door, they still came in . So no IT WASNT MY FAULt, all I wanted to know was

THERE ANYHTING BEING DONE ABOUT THE CRIME, hmmm answer NO!!!!!!!!!! all u can do is drink, relax and run around nude, there is then nothing to worry about being stolen, especially if ur not a virgin

I was planning a trip to Bonaire for our dive club. But because of the robberies and burglaries that I have read from many trip reports, I have decided to go to Roatan instead. You would think the authorities in Bonaire would want to take care of this. There are so many other places to go with fantastic diving. I can't imagine how much they are losing in tourist revenue because of this. I know of at least 12 divers that will be going to Roatan instead of Bonaire.

ah Roatan. the only place where armed soldiers stopped my taxi to verify i wasn't being kidnapped.

What is this - do we need a new crime on bonaire thread every week?
