Another season here. Anyone been out diving recently? Thinking of Ft W maybe next week.

Not yet. Looks like a good weekend for it. Probably a couple of weeks for due to visitors. Keep us posted!

Short Ft W warm up dive this morning. Arrived early at 6:30 due to the oppressive heat. No other divers. Calm conditions. Incoming tide. Water temperature 59. Vis a cloudy particulate heavy 3’ vis. A couple star fish, some small black fish and a tiny lobster.

While no divers, there was about 10-15 cars in the parking lot. Workers arriving early heading to a house or project nearby where there was no parking and/or parking not allowed.

I was just going to ask if you made it out last weekend. 59 seems a little low, but not by much. Thanks for the extra traffic heads up.

My computer thermometer is very accurate unlike some. Newport noaa buoy reported 65 which is always warmer than Ft W, at least in my experience.

Anyone diving RI this weekend? NOAA Newport Buoy reading 69.

If anyone goes this weekend, and I hope they have the opportunity to do so, I recommend wearing plenty of exposure protection. Those NOAA buoy temperature readings can be misleading as the buoys measure the water temperature about 3 feet below the surface which really isn't indicative of the water temperature at diving depth. I'm not all that familiar with the typical temperature profiles of RI waters but I will give an example based on that of Cape Ann waters; the Massachusetts Bay NOAA buoy surface water temperature has been reported to be in the low to mid 60s for the past several weeks but once you get below 10 feet or so the water temperature drops markedly. Based on my dives the past few weeks, and as recently as yesterday, I've been seeing water temperatures in the low 50s at depth (e.g. below 20 feet). I'm still wearing my chicken vest and fleece boot liners along with my 7 mm wetsuit.

Cape Ann very different temps than RI Newport Jamestown

We’re hoping for 2 days of diving this weekend, tomorrow and then either Saturday or Sunday. Have to break in the new 7mm. How about you?

Erik

Trying to avoid all the holiday traffic this weekend. Maybe in a couple weeks
