We were on the island 12/27-1/5. I'm intending to do a full trip report because a couple interesting things happened but I do have a couple things on the food topic.
La Choza: had eaten here before but decided to go again as we are in search of a new "go-to" traditional family Mexican restaurant. Love El Moro but it's kind of far and the last couple meals we had there were just OK. La Choza knocked my socks off, such a great family atmosphere, great drinks, service, and the food was fantastic. Fair prices listed in pesos so at the current 20/1 exchange rate our meal was a bargain. Wife and I both had steak/shrimp fajitas (best fajitas of my life, truly), my 14yo son had Chicken Mole (presentation and taste were both A+), 11yo daughter had chicken quesdillas. All meals came with chicken soup that was superb, we also had guacamole and pico for an appetizer, wife had a couple margs and I had uno, dos, tres, (quatro? Yo no se) Sols, and our bill was around $1850 pesos with tip. We will be back mucho mucho tiempos.
Chela Nah: This one had been on my list to try for awhile. We love La Cocay and figured since it's the same ownership it had to be good too. Where to start, first of all the location is super cool. It's an old house that feels like a beach shack. Very cozy and intimate with cool decor. Our server Elvira was amazing. She helped us practice our Spanish and we helped her practice her English. She is a Cozumel native and seemed truly appreciative when we told her how much we loved the island and how long we have been coming. On to the food, the whole menu looked awesome but we decided to just order a bunch of tacos and share family style. Before the tacos though we had to get the melted cheese with Chorizo, one of my all-time fav appetizers. It was superb. Tacos, we got Surf and Turf ($240), Garlic Shrimp ($180), Ribeye ($220) and a pork one. Each serving came with 3 generously sized tacos that we passed around. For sure some of the best tacos I've had anywhere. When the bill arrived I once again felt like we just got the deal of the century. To feed a family of 4 with a teenager who eats like a horse and two parents who aren't shy about ordering another round when traveling by taxi, to eat a meal of that quality with such a great experience for under $100 sign me up for that every single time.
Other places we ate: Missed a couple of our favorites in La Monina, Conchita del Caribe, and Azul Madera. Had great meals at La Cocay (one of the finest restaurants on the island IMO), La Mission (great for lunch when you're walking around downtown), Portosal (kinda pricey but the pizza is good and the views/location are nice), Jeanies (not somewhere I would seek out but it was very convenient to El Cantil), Burger Box (great burgers and super quick), and Rock N Java. Kinda stumbled into Rock N Java on accident because Jeanies was packed, and it was really good! Very large and diverse menu. Recommend for sure.
Coffee: My wife and daughter liked to walk downtown for coffee/breakfast on the days that my son and I were diving solo. They tried Maple Bakehouse and Sucre Sale. Of the two, Maple Bakehouse was the clear favorite. Also want to try Coz Coffee on 5th.
We had a really not great/bad meal and experience on New Year's Eve. Don't need to blast them, it's kind of my fault for not getting reservations sooner at a place I knew would be good. Moving on.....
My list of places I want to try is still longer than my list of places we have tried, so I guess we'll just have to keep coming back and checking them off the list!
