deepstops:
It might just be because Dawn wants to make sure Hilary is happy with the compensation offer before it's rejected by everyone else here who wasn't even on the boat. And it will carry more weight when Hilary posts saying she's happy.

By that logic, Dawn shouldn't have even apologized in her response since she should have apologized first to Hilary, and then Hilary could tell us if she felt it were adequate and sincere.

It's not an assumption but a fact that Dawn did not offer any refund in the written response. In fact, there was no indication in the response that she even intended to contact Hilary and discuss it further or make it right. Now that a ruckus over a refund has been made, I'm sure one will be offered. If no fuss was made, I feel like they would have been happy to leave it at that.

Dawn said she spoke to everyone yet no mention of the captain's response. I would want to know who that captain is so I can avoid him. I wonder what the DM's thought about it all.

The response struck me as basic damage control without saying anything specific. Whether that is accurate or not, that is the perception I got. In business, perception is everything. All of us, especially those conducting business, are judged on what we say and do, and also what we don't say and don't do.

Yep, it was all just a stop gap measure. Dawn is out of state on vacation and is still doing everything she can to make this situation right to Hilary as quickly as possible. I'm sure she spent the majority of her day working on this. Please forgive her if her response didn't make YOU happy. The part about making assumptions was directed to the statement Hilary would have to call Dawn to get a refund. That's not what Dawn wrote in her message.

I agree with NetDoc. Let's have patience 9per deepstops posts) and see how and when Hilary gets happy again.

I think firing the captain is extreme. A life-bettering experience for the captain would be to know that he cost the dive op some money that hopefully comes down the pipe to Hilary's changepurse.

It would be better to rub the captain's nose in his piss, than to give up on him and dimiss him. Knowing that he has to work harder for the next two years, because he ain't getting any bonus or pay raise for the next annual personel reviews is punishment enough that will end up being a hard lesson learned.

Firing is just too harsh, I think.

Hillary,
Out of curiousity,is this the same Crystal Clear charters that is on the east side of the road in Tavrnier, where you have to go between a hotel and a restuaraunt to get to the boat?
Just curious.

Walter:
Cristal Clear is next to the Pilot House in Key Largo.

They operate from the Pilot House marina area and in Tavernier (in front of I think the Keys Motel). One of their boats, is the old Kelly's Aquanut's boats.

(What's wrong with a little forgiveness?)

Hello All.... I'm just logging on to see the posts. (Darn work always gets in the way.)

I personally found Dawn's reply to be sincere and that it addressed MY primary issue, which was the inappropriate way the incident was handled.

RE: the manifest issues and why I did (and still do) belive that I needed to accept some responsibilty for not finding out their procedure: I am a HUGE advocate and quite passionate about diver accountability. We are conditional visitors in a hostile and unforgiving environment, and we have an obligation to follow the rules. Just as the "Captain" (whoever that may be) has the final authority, he also has the final liability. That is no excuse to act in the manner that this particular captain did, obviously. But this is the first time I've seen it abused. I have the utmost respect for most of the captain's I've known.

In retrospect...I find it at least interesting to detach and analyze how the breakdown occurred. Of course I'm sure I would NOT have been left...my buddy was at least good for that. :D But...if there had been current on the Grove (as their frequently is) or we'd have somehow been seperated, it would have been possible. Not a thought I like...and why I think it's important to know the rules and follow them. I'm an ER nurse...and we are fond of the saying "Ignorance on your behalf does not necessarily constitute an emergency on mine."

And finally...Dawn DID contact me directly and I feel like my complaint was resolved to my satisfaction. How she deals with her human resource issues is her business, and her decision. If i saw that Captain on any other boat, I'd turn around and get off. That would be MY decision. She will handle it as she sees fit, I'm sure.

So....I guess all is well. It was a decidedly unpleasant experience, but it's over and it's pointless to dwell on the negative. What is really REALLY awesome is SCUBABOARD!!!! SB'ers rock...for their amazing cohesiveness as a group. I've seen alot of wonderful things come from this board, my situation is SO miniscule. Think of Matt and TekDiveGirl and all the awesome stuff we have accomplished!!

I still say you would be feeling better if you had flushed the shirt down the head as you waited for everyone to ascend from the second dive.
