If you had to make a judgement on what was the most vital part of the PADI Rescue Dive course; what would that part be?

The most useful info for me has been the stuff on identifying early signs of stress, and eliminating the need for a rescue before an event cascades out of control. The best rescue is the one that you don't have to perform because you proactively responded to the potential problem early.

For me, most useful (and fun!) in-water exercise was the panicked diver rescue drill. It turned into a competition of "who can kill his rescuer", and our instructor finally refused to allow us to do any more repetitions of the drill after we had each done it about 5 times.

self-awareness and early self-rescue as well as observing and pre-empting other divers' slides into accident territory

Well put Andy!!! Although surfacing the unconcious diver and dealing with a panicked diver underwater were quite interesting skills as well.

playing the part of the panicked diver.

Even though you're play acting, the splashing and yelling put you into the mindset of someone who isn't behaving normally, whose ability to think rationally is impaired.

The rescue course will also give you some ideas as to how to handle those types of situations. It's well worth it. Take it.

I took the course, and yes it did gave me lots of info on how to rescue ppl and self rescue, but some people are just total *********

Life's too short to worry about people like that. You can choose not to dive with people like that.
