My friend gave me two older model Mares pneumatic spearguns to bring up to the states to get them serviced. He said they need new rings and to be repressurized. I took them to the local shop and they claim they can't do the work without the shafts and cockers. My friend, who is a Master Scuba Diver Trainer, says that is unnecessary and I should go pick up the guns.

Can anyone help me with this? Is the shop wrong? Does Mares service their spearguns?

I have no clue why a shaft or even a cocker would be required. Any shop would have the pump to pressurize. Let's see there are more places that repair or sell the parts for you to repair. I know if you contact SCUBAsWorld.com they sell the parts and also do the repair if you desire. May want to post on Mares forum for Zak O'Hara the Mares Rep. He had a shop manual pdf.

I can see using shaft to check the seals, but any shop should have a shaft of the correct diameter with butt adapter if they sell Mares.
