We have stayed at Cantamar a couple of doors down from the Villa and we did not rent a car for the whole trip. We only rented on an non diving days to go around the island. Other than that you cabs are plentiful in the area or if the weather is nice it is an nice walk to centro for dinner.

The Villa Aldora will take you to the Mega when you arrive for free. There us a small supermarket a short walk from the Villa that can handle the rest.

And the free bikes are good for a trip into town.

Rented from Margarita/Isis this past October = $45/day for 12 days - inc all ins, newer small car w/ AC. If you don't use the car for 1 day it's bye-bye $45. Times 2 = $$ for 1 dive day. Versus taking a taxi it can be quite an expense over time. I like walking and am not a fan of driving (or parking) in MX, but my travel companion was adamant. On the other hand it was easy to go to the east side, visit the Humane Society, get to a beach club and venture back in the hood with a car. Still, if it were just up to me I'd rent for a day or 2 for those far flung places and then walk/taxi the rest.

I always rent a car. I like having the freedom to go anywhere at anytime. I have used avis at the airport, Thrifty, dollar, blueway, and payless. I have never had an issue. Had a bumper cover come loose from the speed bump at Meridiano and they just gave me another car. I always video the prerental inspection and give a small tip to the agent when I pick up the car and leave a few pesos and some snacks for the person who cleans it upon return. I take the required insurance for liability and rely on my credit card to cover the collision part. Others will be along to tell why this is a bad idea, but it works for me. I use the car every afternoon to either run errands, tour the island, go to the beaches on the east side, go out for dinner, go out for late night tacos, pick up and drop off gear , drop off and pick up clothes at laundry at end of trip, etc.

You probably don't need a car.

However, we always rented until we got our own. I think being able to jump in the car and go wherever and whenever we wanted let us get to know the island better. There is a lot in San Miguel and even more outside of town, and it's easier to get places with a car even for those who love to walk.

If you're on a tight budget, the cost of renting a car could be a real issue. For many, the additional USD$35-50 per day is a small price to pay for the added freedom.

While I like renting a car, the cost can add up over a few days. We like ISIS Margarita, rented a nissan tilda, it was a 4 door sedan like a versa with AC, but at $55/day.

Ok, I have stayed at the Villa Aldora a few times. Don't rent a car at first. If you want rent a car just ask Chris or Chris (the property managers) and poof, your car will appear at the Villa from a respectable car rental. Don't need it any more and you can deliver it downtown or have it picked up at the Villa.

The Villa Aldora takes good care of their guests.

We have always rented a car for our entire stay on the island. Having said that, we also are out "exploring" almost every day after diving as well. We enjoy driving all over the island and attempting to see new things.

it all depends on how you vacation, if you just want to drive around the island a day or two, and are staying where cab fares are low enough to come to town or go where you need to go, just rent the car the days you need it.

You are right, just depends on if your staying at the resort or going to travel out every day. ISIS is the best, we learned that you never rent from a national company but local and the Police will not give you a hard time in case of an accident. Also remember even with her insurance you have a 10% co-pay. We always rent and love it. This time we found ASADERO EL BILLY's. The BBQ Tips were so good no BBQ sauce was needed.

We have always rented from ISIS. We mostly get the VW hardtop, but last trip they were out and so got a Nissan Tilda, like a versa but the next level down. It did have AC, crank up windows, 4-door, Automatic, $55/day. I had heard that you can get a 0 co-pay instead of the 10%, but forgot to ask about it.
