Would buying this package generally be a bad idea?

Please keep in mind in answering this question - I'm pretty broke. I know the package obviously might not be DA BOMB, and will suck at extreme depths, but I'm figuring (based on my limited knowledge, of course) it will work fine in into-tech territory (say perhaps 100-180 feet)... unless people tell me repeatedly that these regulators are complete, undeniable crap.

Of course, I don't want to base my decision solely on money, as the equipment is keeping me alive, but it is definitely cheaper than buying all the items separately, over time, etc...

What is your opinion?

Why do you think they are crap at extreme depths....?

I would just go with tried and tested options, unless you want to take the risk. Look around what other people dive in your area in the same conditions and go with that. In that case you will know that there will be no surprises.

Exactly - where did this fantasy come from??? I've used mine at 200ft no problem. Although even the worst regs breath great with proper gas choices :d

Dive rite is a reliable company, as is dive gear express. I suspect you would have no problems with that package.

To toss out an additional option, slightly newer and slightly less expensive are the new HOG regulators (such as HOG Gear Doubles Reg Package - Dive Right In Scuba - Plainfield, IL). They haven't been around long enough for long-term testing, but the reviews I've read over the last year have been good. One benefit to the HOGs is that service course is available to tech divers, should you choose to service your own gear.

The main issue I have with this setup is the first stages. The first thing to do when it arrives is remove the DIN connectors and take of the plastic parts and replace them with metal ones. I see these break all the time from people dropping them.

Thanks for the advice - I only assumed they would be not 'that' great, because I'm generally biased on these types of packages. For example, on ebay, you can find endless Mask, Snorkel, and Fins packages that contain unreliable, cheap-Chinese-made products, which look awesome to the untrained eye! I assumed the same for this package, but I'm very happy to hear otherwise!

I have two Dive Rite 2500 regulators which are what appear to be in the link that I use as stage regs. I also have two wings, two BPs and harnesses, two can lights and a drysuit and various other equipment. I have had no major issues with any of my DR equipment. A lot of cave divers I have met use their gear. DR is based in Lake City, Florida. Go to SCUBA Diving Equipment for Technical, Wreck and Cave Diving: Dive Rite, Inc for more information.

Ditto the earlier comment on Dive Gear Express. Also, basically the same setup can be purchased at Cave Adventurers in Marianna, Fl. The PG is different and it may be minus the clips, necklace, and DIN caps. See Dive Rite RG-2500 Doubles Regulator package [RG2500pkg] - $580.00 : Cave Adventurers!, We will NOT be undersold!!!

There is nothing wrong with that package. Dive Rite has some great products and their regulators are no exception!!!!
