That my old Diving Geru (Hero) was right, many years ago. He said that the majority of regulator freezeups happen to second stages, on the surface, after the dive. This data tends to support that.
A few of my experiences?
I have known one brand of (nonenvironmental) reg that had it's first stage to freeze up during a dive to only 30'.
I had a buddy to have his second stage to freeze up during a dive at 170'.
I knew a guy that had a brand new reg that keep freezing up it's first and second stage at 80', on it's first two dives! (There was no thermocline there either!) I believe that he got another brand of reg. after that.
I have had ice crystals to blow through my second stage on several occasions, with no ill-effects to the reg or me.
I have had a second stage to accidentally freeflow, on the surface before the dive, and freeze up. (I merely turned off the air supply, submerged the second stage and repressurize the system. It was fine for the dive)
I would love to hear of more, like, experiences if there are any out there. Thanks!
