My question is this; does it not make sense to make identification of the primary reg more visible and therefore give a panicked diver who is grabbing for an air source a better chance of grabbing the right one?
Color perception changes with depth, so using color to identify regs is generally considered a bad idea. And in zero vis, it won't really matter what color the reg is, because you won't be able to see it anyway. The "right one" in this case is always the one in the donating diver's mouth - it can be found easily by feel if necessary, and you know that if your buddy is breathing it safely at the current depth, then you can breath it safely, too.

If they go for the backup, it will break free and I don't have to remove a reg from my mouth.
This is situation that must not happen because:
a) breaking the necklace can compromise mouthpeace
b) if it's just temporary OOG situation that can be resolved, you'll need your necklace to have backup on it's place when emergency is over

Probably shouldn't answer for someone else but I imagine he has his necklace done up with a double fishermans knot so the reg just pulls out and can be put back in (but maybe knot - pun intended :D).

I have one done that way. The other just has a piece of tube latex under the ziptie with no knot. Reg just slides out with a good tug. I've tested it too. Works fine. And it's JJ approved!

Thanks for the info guys, I use the long hose and I'm very comfortable with it. I plan on taking my fundies later on this year providing I can find a GUE certified instructor within a relatively close proximity to me, I think brownies in Ft. Lauderdale is the closest. Anyway I was just curious as to why regulator identification was not apparent in the rigging and I got my answer, so thanks again.
