Not sure if this is a regulator question or a bag/case question, but what kind of bag to people use if they have long hose or doubles configuration. Seems like an awful lot of hose to fit in some of these regulator bags that are kinda small.

The reason I ask is because I'll be doing my first dive trip this summer, so I'm trying to figure out how to transport my regs on the plane. Photo for reference.

I just carry mine loose in my carry-on. It's one of those travel rollers - not specifically for diving and i find they fit nicely in the tri-fold top where you would normally put long pants. I don't have a long hose but I can carry two sets of conventional regulators in that space. It's the hose routing on the first stage that is occasionally a problem in making it all fit flat. One of these solves that problem: http://www.diverightinscuba.com/cat...m_term=Tl127&gclid=CJS35r7C4r4CFQ9hfgodDwIAFA

Or if you want a specific reg bag there's some bigger ones sold. They probably are your carry-on though since they're likely too big for most airlines to consider as your "personal item". So you trade carrying capacity for a "regulator" specific bag. My roller is 22x14x9 - that's the legal limit on domestic US flights.

I use the square Akona regulator bag (AKB608), works fine added bonus not dive branded. I recently bought one of eBay assuming all reg bags were a standard size, when it arrived it was like "honey, I shrunk the regulator bag" it was a scaled down version, too small unless used for a Flight or Mikron. The Akona is a comfortable size even with 7' hose.

I think it's interesting that we'll carry our regulators in a padded case and then attach them to tanks that fall down on them, they're blowing in the wind bouncing around on the deck of the boat or in the tank mounts. It isn't the regulator in your luggage that gets damaged, it's getting it bent when you forget to put the bungee on the valve and the tank and reg fall off the rack. Or your student crushes your computer taking off their tank. We need padded tanks!

I've always considered regulator bags as something else for dive shops to sell, or something inexpensive they can throw in a package to make you think you're getting more of a deal - not something you actually need. I've never owned or used one, I don't have a long hose but still wouldn't use one if I did. I see no point in using one at home. If they're padded they add unnecessary bulk if you pack it for travel. If you carry them separately it's generally a waste of a carryon.

I used to just coil my reg in my roll-aboard and pack in and around it, which works just fine. What I have started doing though, is coiling it in one of the packing cube things, and I fill the space with bathing suits or whatever. That goes in my carryon. The packing cube adds no bulk and they're typically sized to pack efficiently. It makes it easier to repack if my bag gets opened going through security.
