Agreed. Never carry on any tool you would be upset about losing. I've had tiny allen wrenches take from for example. You never know, and arguing about it never helps. If it's heavy or valuable it goes in the carry on. Regs are both.
Sometimes TSA is weird about tools, sometimes not, better to check them.

I’ve been dive traveling for 20+ years including annual trips to Curaçao the last 10 years…my regs have always traveled in checked bags. Never had a problem other than a delayed bag now and then. If you’re going someplace without rental availability, then that’s a different story, but that involves more than just regs. I carry my prescription mask, DC, swimsuit, and a lycra skin in my carryon (plus hard soled booties if shore diving). I hate lugging more weight than necessary through airports. Guess I’ve been lucky.
I definitely understand that. You don’t want to have to dive a rental reg, not that the reg is too fragile for checked baggage, right?I think the whole stow/carry on debate hinges on the lost/delayed bag scenario and what your plan B looks like. This obviously gets a bit more complicated if you have a series of flights to far away places. Given what many of us experienced last winter with flight delays/cancellations and missing bags, I remain firm in belief that I will continue to carry regs, mask, computer in carry on.
