I've read enough accounts about regulator hose failures to know that although this is an unlikely occurance it seems to happen with enough regularity that one should be prepared for it.

Question is: Has anyone had a hose fail unexpectedly after having recently inspected it? Are most of these failures due to failure to frequently and properly inspect hoses? Inspect visually, by touch, including under hose protector?

How often should hoses be replaced?

Is how a place called Scuba Board didn't have a member named Scuba until July of 2002. ;)

BTW, I haven't had or seen any hose failures, but I've only been diving for a year.

jonnythan,

All I can say is that I was as surprised as you are.

Scuba :)

I've seen a bunch of hoses go bad. Actually, just saw one fail and split almost into two pieces. Fortunately this happened on land. That individual should have taken a closer look at his hoses prior to a day of diving. I've never seen one fail that did not have obvious visual signs of wear. They usually have a bunch of small nicks, or have pieces of the outer covering missing. Most people never check their hoses, especially under the protector. As you can see, this could potentially be a very serious problem. Always check out your hoses...everytime. Also, typically it's the HP hose that goes bad. It's a good idea to carry extra hoses in your save a dive kit.

As far as hose life, I've had the same hoses on my reg for about 3 years. No problems but, I take very good care of my gear and inspect them constantly.

I have had two HP SPG hoses burst. Hence I now use a Air intergrated computer, now that won't be happneing again.
Both times the hoses had been inspected with there service and checked visually before the dives, both were about 2 years old and had done a little over 300 dives.
In both cases the hose broke at the connection point to the First Stage, even with hose protectors on.

Never had a LP Reg hose blow, these are under much less pressure than the HP hoses so the chances are less they will bust

Cheers
Chris
