Update on battery pack:
I had an 8 AA battery pack made by a place called Batteries Plus. They told me that lead acid batteries have problems charging in parallel, but that NiMH and NICd can be paralleled and charged without problems.

That goes against what I have read about parallel charging NiXX cells.

Interesting stuff. I charged mine for a few hours and they seem OK. I used a 12V DC charger at the 1A setting. Voltage was a little over 5V after full charge indicator went off.

Yeah, I think it will all start off good, but after awhile one cell will start to wear/age more than the rest and that will effect the whole string of seriesed cells that cell is in.
You may get a full charge reading but you will not get the capacity you expect. Not good in the back of a big black cave.
