Although I agree that in your case it is better to do them at home, it is not so bad to do them in Cozumel, either. I have certified several people who did those dives on the first days of dive trips I was leading, including one in Cozumel. In the Cozumel situation, I did them in cooperation with the dive operation we were using--it would have been roughly the same if they had done it themselves without my presence. We did dives 1-3 the first day in the shallow area on Paradise reef. After the skills were done, the DM led us on a dive within the maximum depth of 40 feet (first 2 dives) and 60 feet (3rd dive). The student had a pretty good diving experience, with lots of personal attention. The next day we went on the same 2-tank dive trip as the rest of our group. The DM led the group on an 80-foot dive while I stayed with the student above them to stay within the 60 foot limit. We met as the rest of the group ascended to our level and finished the dive together. The student had essentially the same dive experience as everyone else, just not quite as deep. He was now certified and joined everyone else for the 2nd dive of the morning and for the rest of the dives that week.

As for diving in Cozumel in general, I have been there a number of times with my non-diving wife. I did 2-tank dives every morning while she did whatever it was that amused her (mostly snorkeling), and then we were together for the rest of the days and the evenings.

Get your card in Texas, but also hire a private DM the first day of dives in Coz. Money well spent.

Definitely do your OW dives back here in TX. Especially if you can do them at the Meadows Center's Spring Lake and not something like Lake Travis. I have always wanted to get up there and take the Meadows Center class so I could dive Spring Lake whenever I visit my brother in Austin. You will really enjoy Cozumel.

Here's where I could do my OW dives here at home.

I did my OW dives in Travis. It wasn't the greatest dive experience but it was great training for mediocre to low viz diving. After that, diving Cozumel was a breeze and I didn't panic when I dove Monterey Bay.

I did my OW cert dives at Lake Pleasant in AZ which is the same type of low vis as Lake Travis. The reason I said to do his OW dives at Spring Lake is because you can't usually dive there without taking the $250+ course at the Meadows Center. If the OP can experience Spring Lake for his OW cert dives that is a winning combo in my book. I want to take a GUE Fundies class there sometime in the future.

$250+ course at the Meadows Center.
I think OW cert dives are restricted to the training area in front of the sunken theater (sad, as I remember sitting in that as a kid watching mermaids and diving pigs), while the course teaches more and allows you to dive the entire lake.

That sounds like Aquarena Springs in San Marcos..

This is the place I was referring to. Diving there looks fantastic. Do you dive there since you are in Austin?
It closed a few years ago. Before that, my wife went there once or twice but I didn't. I do virtually all my diving at Cozumel these days.

If you pay for and take that class, can you dive there?

I have family in the area and that would maybe be worth it for me.
