I have finally get my hand on a reel and would like to do some practicing with it. If you could advice me any book, forum or any other source of materials describing skills and techniques involving reels I would really appreciate it. Say what is the correct procedure of SMB launch with a reel, setting a guideline, ascend line from wreck etc etc.

Thanks alot.

Your best bet to formally learn this type of stuff is to take an introductory overhead class (like intro to cave, GUE Cave 1, UTD Overhead Protocals, etc.).

Handling depends a lot on what type of reel you are using.

For launching an SMB, unless you are really deep, a spool may be a preferred source of line.

Setting a guideline you will probably want a primary and a secondary tie point, double wrapped. Always keep tension on the line as you proceed forward, and try to make intermediate ties whenever you change direction.

If you are planning to use the reel to deploy penetration lines into any overhead environment, then please please please please seek out an experienced instructor who can teach you how to do it properly.

There are more variables and refinements to this skill than you could believe. It is not something you can 'pick up' from internet research....and if you want to learn it by yourself you are exposing yourself to a level of danger that you will not understand.

Deploying a DSMB is an easier skill that you can practice...although be very wary of entanglement....as it can (and often has) led to undesired and very rapid ascents to the surface.

As Blackwood has already mentioned, for shallow deployments a basic finger spool is easier and more manageable. From deep depths, a full size reel may be needed to deploy sufficient line.

Have a search on youtube.... there are plenty of skill demo videos on there that will show you far easier and clearer than I could type a description here. :)

so THAT'S how you do it!

We've all fumbled with this stuff (though I've never shot my spool to the surface...).

But the description says that was an instructor demonstrating. Wow. Poor, unfortunate students.

Here's a good related video on the subject (complete with appropriate soundtrack): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFpsFFYdEEU

Question: What do you want to use your reel for?
