maybe I'm just cheap ,but wouldn't it be easier to be cremated and have a loved one mix the ashes with some cement then throw the whole thing in the ocean with some kind words.

I'm a little concerned that if I:
1) told my wife I read it on scubaboard
2) mentioned another dive trip
3) asked her (seasickness) to go on another boat ride to put me in the water;

I might get the cement before the ashes are ready

but I think the idea is great.
maybe 1 cuft concrete cubes rather than balls, for me.

Why not cut out the middle man and just cement and dunk your partner pre-death? As long as they've made their will, of course...

Yep, you could do that.

I suppose one could come up with a mold that would hold about five gallons. That is about one bag of "Sak-Crete".

In a pinch, a five gallon bucket could be used and the concrete left in the bucket.

The feature of a reefball one would lose is the very large amount of reef area per pound of concrete.

On the cheap, a better option would be to just scatter the ashes.

When I was working for an outfit that did this, we joked about doing that for an additional charge.

It would save people a fortune in divorce costs, although there were a few legal details we never found a suitable solution to.

Have thought about it, but I'd be cast in stone and placed in the kelp forests of my home (Catalina Island) rather than the tropics. Currently my will requests that I be cremated and my ashes scattered in the five places that have given me the most pleasure.

Two of those places are in the sea off Catalina. I figure my ashes will disperse with the currents and allow me to "dive" all 7 continents eventually if I don't fulfill that dream before I "go."

However, I've been thinking about cause of death recently (perhaps in reaction to my father's passing recently). If I die diving, and they don't find my body, that would be fine by me. If I die topside (shiver the thought), then the body could be cremated and the ashes disposed off either as the will currently states or by being cast in concrete and placed in our local dive park (there are already a few memorial markers there).

Until then... it's time to dive (note the "v")

Well, it wouldn't really be cheap (you'd still have to pay for the cremation etc.) but I'm toying with the idea to have my ashes scattered in a favourite dive site.

As funeral expenses go, cremation can be pretty cheap if you shop around.

The last time I checked (about five years ago), one of the local outfits was offering cremation for $500. That beats the crap out of burial. Considering the heat input required, $500 sounds like a steal.

hubby said his problem with scattering ashes is that on his last dive, he doesnt want to stuff up the viz ;)
