But then we come to this "DECO" thing. In this case you are plain, simply and irrefutably wrong. As has been stated, "deco" is an abbreviation, not an acronym. In the English language, abbreviations are not capitalised, but acronyms are.

Do a search on this forum for "SB" which of course stands for ScubaBoard, and for DM which means divemaster. Are all these members who have capitalized the term, also simply and irrefutably wrong? Is Miriam Webster (click here) wrong when they give examples of capitalized abbreviations for single words as part of the definition of acronym? See the part about "compound term" in the first paragraph if you're confused.

You have posted a picture of a dive computer abbreviating "decompression" to "DECO". It is in all caps because everything on that computer is in all caps.

See attached screenshot of the Vt Pro computer manual showing a screen with a lower case letter.

I actually challenge you to find a computer or watch where they use lower case letters.

Challenge accepted, mic dropped, what do I win?

For Oceanic, using "DECO" instead of "deco" was a design and legibility decision, not an English language decision.

Were you there when the developers made this choice? If not, well there you go again spewing nonsense that you cannot possibly substantiate.

You carry all of this stuff just in case you need it. Two cutting devices, reels, spools, PLB. This is all "just in case" something goes wrong

Yes, I carry emergency backup gear that I will probably never use. Including a locator beacon in case the boat leaves me in the ocean, and two cutting tools and redundant signaling devices as recommended in the SDI solo diver course. I use my reel and smb on almost every drift dive. Your point?

If your equipment has been fine for all these years, why carry a PLB?

You state that no diver should ever carry a PLB because "their gear is fine". I disagree, but again, that's a personal choice, you can dive a shipwreck in your underpants and a snorkel for all I care.

I started out reading this thread, and didn't feel like I could add anything of value.

You were correct the first time. But I appreciate the attempt.

Right or wrong recreational divers going into a short deco obligation is not uncommon. It has had several unofficial terms including “lite deco” here on SB and has been discussed many times in various threads. I think the advent of more conservative dive computers may have prompted this paradigm shift.
Also promoted by some dive charters when avoiding DECO will result in shorter, much less satisfying dives such as on Odyssey in Truk Lagoon.

the way I intended to mount the pony bottle does not allow room for regulator I planned to put on it. Some adjustments will have to be made, it seems...
Consider putting the regulator on a necklace. It's a great spot for it, always right there under your chin, inches away from where it would be needed, one less thing to do (deploy the hose) in an emergency.

People are worried about semantics, when this gentleman is indicating that he saves 500 psi in a 19 cuft pony in order to safely ascend from (say 100 ft) AND perform a 5 minute decompression stop, presumably with about 3 cu-ft.

As @Blackcrusader pointed out, I never wrote that nor implied I ever did anything like this. What I DID say was that I occasionally incur a small DECO obligation, most or all of which is met during the ascent leaving 1-2 minutes maximum. There's more than enough gas available to me to do a 3 minute safety stop and have a few hundred psi in my tanks on the boat which would be sufficient for a short required stop.

However, to argue that a safe ascent can be made on 3 cuft and a 5 minute stop are possible with those kinds of reserves is "hard to swallow" - particularly from a tourist, recreational diver who needs to carry extra gas just to complete a typical rec dive.

I've got more reserve gas between the stony bottle and the primary tank when I begin my ascent than the average recreational diver, and I don't need to share it with anyone.

Nor did I ever write, nor remotely imply that I need extra gas just to complete a typical rec dive.

@johndiver999 try to read more carefully, stick with facts, not conjecture or personal opinion expressed as the only right choice. If you need an example of what constitutes a fact, see most of my posts.

The OP's kit is diametrically opposed to my BP/W minimalist setup, but it is intriguing checking out other people's kits for ideas on what may or may not be a viable option to integrate into my own.

Two friends, one in orange shorts a Padi instructor who has a nice dive op in a resort in Panglao Bohol, the other a PADI IDC Course director I was diving with in February. IDC instructor is quite small herself and has the smallest kit she can buy. It's a Cressi Commander BCD. She mainly dives using a smaller tank as her gas consumption is very low. I'm like dang I could almost put her whole kit into less than half of my BCD is... XXL Scubapro Black.

It really matters not how people have their kit on dives. I do dives with people who rent kit from a dive op. Most of them think I don't have weights as I have inserts. I have to show them my back pocket weights and my inserts in the BCD for them to know otherwise. I also don't expect even those who may have only OW or AOW to know anything about gas consumption, sac rates, anything to know about rescue, or how to plan their own dives. I will get OW divers who don't recognize a lot of critters tag along with me as I take photos or video. Then after the dive we discuss the critters they saw of which many they sometimes didn't even see the critter I took a photo of.

Diving is for our enjoyment. Or it is for me... I let it clear my head of thoughts.

Nice rig, good trim. That dangling hose though.. that's why I use a retractor on mine.

OP is an arch-troll of the highest order. This thread is a masterclass 🤣

And perhaps another updated version of ASD. Newer versions of the firmware are getting more argumentative.

The Mad Hatter is especially affected by this condition of meaninglessness and he is also one of the most wordy of the characters, constantly assessing his own and others’ grammar and syntax to challenge the received meanings of language.
