I'd like to see an MD weigh in on this one. The water molecule is what it is, and it is the same molecule whether it's been processed through reverse osmosis, desalinization, deionization, distillation, or found in a puddle on the side of the road. The human body absorbs it readily whether it comes in alone or accompanied by other substances. That's not to say that electrolytes are not important, but I'd like to hear an expert's opinion on the connection between electrolytes and hydration. I have heard from other quarters that the sport drink industry's position on the connection between hydration and the substances they add to their concoctions is largely hype.
