To me this is a huge difference. I live near a city that recently had a mass shooting (San Bernardino) and not all-that-far from another city where the gunman was randomly killing people and for no apparent reason (Las Vegas). At least in Q.Roo I can choose not to become involved in drugs and stay away from bad areas but in the US you could become a victim anywhere, and at any time. In order to join some of the gangs here you have to kill someone--anyone. You could be walking down the street and be shot just because you happened to be there.

I'm not sure where "the hood" might be in San Miguel but I have walked around neighborhood at midnight many times and not only did I never feel threatened, I felt welcome.

Agree totally with your last comment...ah,the gentle folks of Cozumel,...the feeling was mutual.
 
The Cartels are into a lot more areas than drugs. As has already been mentioned the Blue Parrot shooting involved protection money. Another source of funds is human trafficking. Cancun is a fairly short boat ride from Cuba and a major airport serving much more than US flights. Probably a lot easier to get a visa to fly into Cancun than other places in Mexico. I seem to remember an entire flight from Venezuela being denied entry recently.

1) As has already ben mentioned, the Blue Parrot shooting was not about protection money. Your source has misinformed you.
2) Source for your human trafficking statistics, please. Oh, wait. You didn't use a source, but rather, made a statement, presenting it as fact.
3) The distance from Cuba to Cancun is 128 miles. Yes, in the grand scheme of things, a fairly short boat ride.
4) I think most of us are aware that the center of the earth is not the United States, and that flights from many parts of the world land in Cancun.
5) I did not realize that Cancun had its own Visa's, separate from other places in Mexico. Are you sure about that?
6) A Google search yielded no results about a flight from Venezuela being denied entry into Cancun.

25 million passengers through Cancun airport in 2018. In December alone, 350+ international flights, so yes, it is a major hub and point of entry into Mexico, but they don't have their own VISA's - you either have a VISA to enter Mexico or you don't - they are not issued for specific cities. For most foreigners, that VISA is the little form you fill out on the plane prior to going through immigration and they have the right to deny entry to anyone. Blue Parrot shooting was not just about protection money from my understanding. While the distance between Cuba and Cancun may seem short, it's not really a short or easy boat ride. I don't know any facts about cartels being into human trafficking, I think that is an assumption, but it's my understanding that those are not cartels, but other international organized crime rings.

I think what the poster was trying to say here is that people entering Mexico on a tourist visa via airline arriving in Cancun are less likely to be scrutinized as heavily as someone arriving elsewhere in Mexico. While that seems like "common sense" and may have been true at some point, that's starting to change. Mexico is becoming more sensitive to expats trying to live here long term on 180-day tourist visas, and anecdotal stories are surfacing of increased secondary screening.

Didn't they have some success in cornering the lime market in Mexico a few years ago?
