Just finished my refresher course last night with Mike D of baystatescuba.com.........

Heck of a stand out guy who offered to go over the basics with me at no charge.............. highly recommend him.....

Anyway, I am ready to go diving in a few weeks (just have to buy a steel tank).......

I know it would be too much to ask for someone to take me out and show me the ropes about lobstering in New England, (in fact, I have been memorizing the movie "the lobster tamer" lobster catching techniques)........ but.......

Does anyone have any suggestions on which locations in the North Shore to consider lobstering as a amateur?

Thanks fellows.......:beerchug:

Back Beach is a good spot. It's a very easy entry and a shallow dive. As with any site on the north shore, parking can be tough. If you are ever in Maine, you are welcome to join our dive group. Just no taking lobsters in Maine.

Thanks Maine Diver........

Seems like everyone here in Mass. is pretty tight lipped..........:wink1:

No, I'm sure people are just busy. I don't think you will find too many lobsters this early in the season. They are probably still in deeper waters. I am a complete novice so I wouldn't be much help in technique. In my limited experience, you have to have some luck on your side.

Front Beach, Back Beach and Old Garden Beach are all relatively easy entry. Front and OGB are probably easier at this time of the year that Back beach... Folly Cove is pretty good and easy as well :)
At least these are the sites I know most, but there are others which are not bad at all ! I went to White's Beach and right now is a great time to dive there before the parking ban is in effect !

As Maine Diver said we have a number of nice sites on our south coast. I take a special interest in diving with new divers and would be happy to hear from you if you want to wander north. Plenty of lobster to see latter in the season but don't even think about taking any.

I sense divers from Maine are very jealous about their lobsters......:D

Pete I would wonder anywhere someone would be willing to take me lobstering.......;)

The season might be early still for the crustaceans, so I was even contemplating a boat dive from Cape Ann divers.......less work, more diving...... but you give me the word, I will be there.......:cool2:

In my younger days in California, I used to be the hunter everyone wanted to buddy up with......I have mellowed out since, but still young at heart..........:)

DiverDMD, it is against the law for divers to take lobsters in Maine. Maine does not issue recreational lobster permits like MA does. We can look but not touch. From reading the dive reports, it seems it's still too early for the lobsters to come in shallow. Patience.

Wow, I really didn't know about the Maine lobster law.......

You want to come down south of the border? :)

BTW, how about spearfishing in ME? Also very restricted?

In Maine lobster is only taken by trap. Casco Bay Lines will take you out of Portland and show what it's all about as will other operations.

As for diving for lobster up hear first of all you won't make friends with local divers that way. We share the water with the lobster boats. It's not uncommon to have a boat come into range in the course of the dive. They are always let to wonder if the people below the bubbles are messing with their livelihood. A friend describes it as the lobster mafia, they are not to be messed with. Generally it's a respectful tolerance situation at present.

If the wardens catch you then you lose your gear, your vehicle and it goes downhill from there

Plenty to see while diving and plenty of lobster for sale are fair prices.

I saw none this morning in Kennbunkport. Despite this early spring it's still April 24 in the ocean.
