MBDC for guided tours is a good choice, but as Chuck said, any of the dive shops there can help you so if MBDC cannot arrange for someone to guide you then try one of the others. I used them when I was a new diver.

The convienient thing about them is they're right across the street from the Breakwater. You can suit up in the shop (they have rentals if you don't have your own), walk across the street and in the water. Once in you'll be hooked like the rest of us.:)

Oh yeah, I too was born and raised in Chicago and worked in the concessions at Soldier Field when I was a teenager. Go Bears!!!!!

Hi All,

I'm forced to visit family in CA every few months :) so I thought I'd try to work out a dive while I'm there. I'll be in San Francisco a couple days and was lookinginto MBDC for guide/boat dives. I got certified in a quarry where the temps at 80+ ft are in the 40s so I have a 7mm, hooded vest and gloves but I was wondering if that was warm enough for a Feb/March dive in Monterey. Any input greatly appreciated!

If you're used to diving in the 40's, you shouldn't have any problem with our water temps here. The only time you'd probably notice it is after a dive or two where your body doesn't get a chance to warm up.

Well, mind you, I don't spend a lot of time in the 80 ft range at 44 degrees - just very short visits. But the 50 and 60ft range tends to be in the upper 50s, which is fine with me.

Thanks for all the info. Contacted MBDC and I'm set-up for a dive this coming Sunday. Let's just hope mother nature cooperates. They told me the dives will be shore dives. I really hope I like it.

PS. For all the bears fans, there's always next year.

I'm about to do the same thing (first "cold water" diving) in Monterey. Let us know how your experience with MBDC and if a 7mm wetsuit plus hood, etc. worked for you in the 50+ degree Monterey water.

Chuck Tribolet:
It was 48F on both dives today, and it generally gets colder over the next few months.
:icon10: 48F? Yikes. Guess I'll just have to find out tomorrow how I do with that kind of water temp. How was the surf/waves? That really is what bothers me more.
