So my father is showing a little more interest in diving. He said his biggest issue (besides the cold, lol) is that he can't read the gauge. His go to readers are 2.5, but do I need to allow for underwater magnification?

I believe my best bet would be to get a DGX mask with them already installed? Since they only offer 2.0 or 3.0 what would be better?

I am nearsighted (and just wear contacts when diving), he is farsighted.. so I don't really understand readers.

Thanks!

I use the scubapro “D” mask it costs more but the lenses are readily available right from SP and easy (ish) to change. I got tired of head tilting to see stuff with readers so I just put in + 1.5 and can make out the Teric and actually see well at all distances, the also make - lenses for you, there is another less costly mask (zoom?) that uses the same set up, both Use the elastic strap which I really like.

I also have the Tusa Paragon that has easy change lenses but they don’t sell lenses for it.

I don't understand head tilting? Would that be something he would have to do with the DGX masks?

A function of readers, only one spot with magnification so when I’m looking for or at some little critter I had to get in range of the lens while tilting my head back or to the side (depending on where I put the lens) to see any detail, now with the whole lens I can see stuff normally and further away but still read the computer. “What a drag it is getting old”.

I'll just offer what I do, but get other's input. My everyday readers are also 2.5. I do my desktop computer work and even drive with them on {you can compare to your dad}. Underwater I use an Oceanic Pro plus 2 and the numerals are about 1/4 inch tall for tank pressure and 1/8" tall for bott time. They are fuzzy when read without{above} the magnifying glass disk that I glued inside my left mask lens. But 100% totally clear when I look thru the mag-disk. I use the 2.0 glass magnifying disk. Yet that disk in the lower mask lens portion doesn't interfere with my scanning side to side constantly looking for lobsters or sharks. I'm diving tomorrow and it's shark month down there !!

Forcing a mask to fit his face is just going to be an irritation. That's why I like the glue in glass masks. I scrub the inside of my mask with a tooth brush & tooth paste and that disk won't budge. The glass disks are available from Dolphin Scuba in Sacramento for $30. It's the only place I've found them online. I triedthe 3.0's but they are too strong. Clean the glue area 2-3 times with rubbing alcohol so it's very clean. Just my two cents, let him keep his mask that he loves, then glue in the 2.0 glass disk and he will be 100% happy.

Really appreciate you taking the time to write all that out. He's not a very active diver (maybe 6 or 8 total). With that said it's always hard to get new divers to a place where they know what works and what doesn't or what feels right. Compounded by the fact that he's just an old school, keep your mouth shut, grit your teeth and bear it kind of guy....

He does have a SP mask that he uses, so maybe I can try that in those.

I’m currently debating sending ours in for prescriptions, both of us have mild reader scripts but find without them it’s getting hard to see.
any advice on a good site to send them to?

When I first went to readers, I used SeaVision.

Once I had to move on to full prescription lenses, I just had them put them into my existing mask.

I don't understand head tilting? Would that be something he would have to do with the DGX masks?
I used these folks who put readers in my wife's and my masks:

Prescription Dive Mask Specialists | See The Sea RX

I highly recommend them. They also do full prescription masks with progressive lenses, etc. They were very fact. It took about 10 days from the time that I sent our masks in until I got them back. I actually had 2 of mine done one with slightly larger lenses for my photography stuff and and one with Gauge readers.
