Like you, I learned the very hard way. If you don't take care of the Swimmers Ear infection, it'll take care of you the hard way. I could be wrong on the meds so I won't try to name them, but my best recovery experiences included oral antibiotics and ear drops with steroids both. See a physician as soon as the infection may set it, and if you're given oral only, at least ask about the drops. I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, just speaking from my experiences and opinions.BTW DandyDon, can you elaborate on the alcohol / vinegar rinse?
After several infections, the last one a couple of years ago, I have become much better at using a 50-50 mix of alcohol & white vinegar after every dive and every shower on a dive trip. I cannot find simple dropper bottles, so I buy the OTC med, pour out the liquid that comes in it, and refill with the 50-50 mix, seriously. The package is mainly what you pay for anyway.
Some suggest adding equal parts of alcohol, vinegar, and hydrogen peroxide. I have seen the H2O2 criticized as something to add to the ear canal, but what probably happens with the mix is that the H2O2 breaks down to water, diluting the active parts - actually adding more water to the ear.
