From the Physics Section of the PADI Dive Theory Exam:

Approximately how much air must be pumped down from the surface to fill a 40 litre container if the container lies in 40 metres/132 feet of salt water?

a. 160 litres

b. 100 litres

c. 40 litres

d. 200 litres

I will post a daily question from my exams to help newer divers and to encourage more experienced divers to interact gracefully and helpfully with the newer divers.

Reminder - this is a post in the Basic Forum and it is a green zone. Please be nice and on topic.

Thank you for your patience while we try to give people something to discuss other than Covid-19 and/or Politics. I will post the answer covered by the spoiler tag later today.

I'm not a big expert but to me seems like around the 200L, considering the pressure will be 5ATM which will effectively compress the air by 5x, so 200÷5=40

Define “fill”. Is the container compressible? What was the volume of the container on the surface? Are we filling it so that it occupies the same volume as in the surface?

Insufficient information.....

Looking like I got this one incorrect.

You have to make an assumption about the container, I'll assume this is like a balloon, that was empty at the surface
Note the title says cylinder....but not the question. I assumed balloon too, except for that title. Finally, I agree, a bad question. :)

That was my confusion too. Finally decided to go with the poll and written question saying container, and went with the balloon choice. I couldn't figure out how a cylinder could be "empty" and require filling at depth, short of starting with a vacuum :).

Based on the last 27 days, looks like PADI could use some critical review and/or validation of some of their question. Regardless, I find this fun, a great idea by @Pedro Burrito. He just posts the questions, he does not write them :)
