Thanks for the info re: crowds and other springs. Can't wait for some warm water diving this summer!

We were doing a night dive in the cavern last month and I look down and there is a solo diver in cave equipment with her light off in the ballroom. I hadn't seen her get in because my divers had just certified the day before and I was focused on them but after the dive one of my students said the diver had hurried up and gotten ready and got in right after we did. I saw her exit shortly after we got out of the water. I originally thought she was an employee watching us because they knew my divers were new and this would be their first night dive and I was letting them go in the cavern (Ok so I'm paranoid). When I had mentioned possibly drifting the river from the Devil's to Ginnie earlier in the day an employee almost had a cow because my divers were new and "you know how new divers are and stuff comes at you fast and they can get tangled in the trees and the visibility is really bad." BTW, we had a great time on the drift and the students even towed the flag, did all 3 Devils then drifted to Ginnie and ended up with an hour long dive and the students still came back with 1500psi (same as me).

How was the vis in the river? I heard about 2 weeks ago that it was 5'ish, and I am hopeful that it will be better for the MegaDive next month.

H2Andy:
Ginnie, however, does not allow solo diving. they'll kick you out

[edit -- this was told to me by one of the "security guards" whatever they are called]
I believe the correct term would be "Scuba-Nazi"
Or, maybe that is the popular term for them.
At least I know one thing for sure, it is the most commonly used term

Last weekend we went there(couldn't hold out) and I was able to see beer cans on the bottom of the river from the surface, and determine what brand of beer came in the cans so I'd say it was somewhat over 5'.One time I saw an old Bud can with the pull top and square sides with a chime at the top and bottom.(early to mid seventies) Best guess was about 20' or so(Its only 12 or 14' so it's a guess.
Although tonights weather indicates that that area was to get some locally heavy rain (4-5 inches per hour).
Hopefully it doesn't screw things up,but even still there is always the springs. :D

Do you have to be cave certified to dive there? Also, are there any rules against diving solo?
From the waiver:
I understand that I am expected to follow all prevailing standard safe-diving
practices for divers of my level of training and certification, as described by the
major training agencies.

So unless you are solo trained, you would not be following the standard safe-diving practices.:D

NACD does not have a regulation against solo diving. Infact they specifically state that they do not forbid it.

I dive there once a week, and I almost always see someone diving solo.

Having said that it IS listed in the rules of accident analysis as one of the five most common factors contributing to fatalities in overhead environment.
1. lack of proper training
2. failure to maintain continuous guideline to surface
3. depth >130 ft
4. solo diving
5. Failure to have 3 lights

(took 7 seconds to remember the rules)
