I did think of this and did some cost analysis based on my limited diving. The thing is most of my diving is on a cruise so I may hit 6 destinations in a week and it is $9-$12 per dive shop or $54-$72 per week I dive. This doesn't always occur but If I can get a good deal on some regs on black Friday I could break even in the mater of two years and have my own gear. I guess part of it is just knowing the gear I'm using is mine and I have 100% control of the failures. I had a LP hose burst at the hose crimp on me once and it was a bit unnerving.

I agree with the first part of this statement but not the second. 30-40 dives/year is not as small a number as one might think, and the rental cost would quickly exceed that of buying a mid level regulator. 5-10 dives/year, sure I'd agree. And there are lots of certified divers (probably the majority) who only dive that much or less.

No you don't....but the sentiment is correct, you'll have control over the maintenance and care.

I don't agree with the "adjustable unbalanced = always less good" comment.
For example, properly tuned and placed on a balanced first stage, a Scubapro "Adjustable" will breathe just as well as a "Balanced Adjustable"...

I stand corrected, it should read "sometimes good (barrel), sometimes less good (downstream)".
Thx DA.

Thanks for all the help guys. I got a hog d1 first/second stage package today taking advantage of black friday specials. I got one for my GF too so I can become familiar with rebuilding them and ease maintenance some. Plus we can both use the same parts and rebuild kits. I really couldn't pass up the prices and with the reviews on the HOG regulators. Even if I use this 20 times a year and rebuild them annually I'll break even when I'm paying about $9/day to rent at each dive location I go to in about 2 years.
