My friend wants to be certified but 4 or so years ago she had surgery to remove a disease and they took out a TINY portion of the bottom of her lung. She called her DR back where she used to live in NY and he had his nurse call back days later with "no." That's it, nothing else. Is there ANY hope, second opinions??

Well, I am no doctor but I would bet this is a simple case of "don't know so CYA". In this law suite crazy country its a lot safer to say no. The best thing your friend can do is to contact DAN (Divers Alert Network) and get a referal to a doctor who has experience and knowledge of diving and hyperberic med. At least then she would know it was a valid answer and not a simple CYA.

Of course, a definitive answer to this can't be given here, but removal of a small portion of the lower lung isn't necessarily a contraindication to scuba.

The decision would depend on such factors as what condition prompted the surgery, current status of that condition, success & residua of the surgery, current pulmonary health and pulmonary function status, and the like.

I think that she deserves an evaluation by a pulmonologist with a knowledge of dive medicine.

There should be such a professional in the greater Chicago area.

Contact DAN at http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/contact/email.asp?RE=Medicine and ask for a referral.

If they cannot assist you, you may e-mail directly and I'll see if I can locate an appropriate physician.

Best regards.
