Soggy:
Unfortunately, I have found that dive shops are probably the worst place to go for information regarding diving techniques.
Soggy is dead on the money. Especially if the LDS does not teach/understand said methods. They only preach what they sell.

As for helmets and lights mounted on the head - you're going to blind your buddy when you look at him - that and using lights on the head is a tough way to give light signals.

I was confused by the ASSumption comment. Jason and Soggy have you on the right path.

I think i got lucky with my LDS. The owners (husband and wife) are both pretty cool, and one of their best suppliers is OMS, so him being apprehensive to plug any BP/W and harness shows me that it's just not how he likes/teaches to dive. As you said, it's only because he doesn't fully understand the method.

You are taught, when donating the regulator, to dip your head to allow the hose to slide easily clear. You don't wear any bulky gear on your head in DIR, so there's no issue there. The long hose, properly routed, sits close to the body and against the back of the neck, and is not an entanglement hazard.

Since the long hose, routed under the canister light, is a very common technical diving configuration for people other than those who are DIR, I suspect it's a pretty useful wreck diving setup as well.

Be very careful about what you hear from dive shops. In my experience, people are very ready to throw out theoretical concerns that are irrelevant in practice, and they are more than ready to be critical and negative about things they know little or nothing about.
