I suppose I should weigh in on the hood question (yes, wear one) - but I really wanted to say how much I envy you being able to do your checkout dives at Catalina. Try not to let the great diving distract you from doing your skills........... sigh
 
I was in Catalina in May -- I'm used to diving in Monterey, which is definitely colder. For sure, wear a hood in Catalina.
 
I used to dive Catalina frequently, with no hood. My hood was on a vest and I was too lazy to want all that neoprene; determined I didn't need it. First time I dove Monterey I spent my SI shopping for a hood. Now that I have one, I won't dive without it.

Makes a huge difference!
