Purge vs. No Purge Mask

I am a minimalist by nature and like to keep things simple. To me a purge valve is just something else that can eventually fail. It is also why I prefer the older cars. Besides, once you learn how to clear a mask it becomes second nature and takes all of half a second. That being said there are always the exeptions to the rule who for some reason or another have better luck with the purge masks. But if you are playing the odds, start with a regular mask.

Started with a purge, and just recently went purgless. My first dive after losing the purge valve was a cluster. Since then, I wouldn't even think about going back. My new mask is lighter, more comfortable (I have a big German nose), and I realized I don't need those panaramic windows either!

Keep the mask simple is my new motto!

I have one of each. I started on the no-purge and learned how to use it properly and then I bought a quality purge mask. I like them both, and the purge one is kind of my 'luxury' mask for when I feel to lazy to clear. It's a matter of personal preference really. Some people like them and some people hate them, you have to try one and see for yourself. Don't get a cheap one though, they will leak and wear out faster, just as anything cheap does. I've had mine 2 years and about 100 dives and it's never been a problem.

Purge masks are great, if you don't cheap out. Also placement of the purge in a purge masks make a huge difference, the ones with a small horizontally placed purge under the nose might as well not even be there. If your going to rock a purge mask go "old school" and get one with a big purge in front of your nose with 3 big windows for extra viz out of the mask. That is why I generally prefer purge masks, the viewing windows are bigger. Also the smaller "low-volume" masks really bother my vision as I can always see the split between the two panes of glass. As far as reliability goes, I have never had a purge in a mask fail on me. I even have a 1979 Scubapro supervision mask that still works perfectly. I also never understood why people make a big deal about that being a failure point. They seem to ignore the fact that every regulator out there has the same purge mechanism that lets one exhale through the regulator. So it really just goes back to being what feels best for the individual.

I've only ever used a purge mask. As others have stated, pinching your nose to equalize may involve both hands. My next mask will definitely be a non-purge.

My view with Purge valves is the same as split fins,dry suits,big tanks,small tanks etc etc.
That is you use what makes YOU feel comfortable once you have enough experience to tell the difference.
I feel that when you are starting out you could have two slabs of 6x1 tied to your feet.An airline lifevest for a bcd and a kids toy mask and you'd really not know because you are so task loaded just figuring out the basics.
Once beyond that level then hey whatever floats your boat.

Since you can no longer get mask with a decent sized purge, ala SwimMaster Wide View or the old USD Pacifica, I'd go non purge.
