I'll be proposing to my girlfriend in Cozumel this year. As if proposing whilst underwater isn't already creative enough (compared to the average joe), I also want a creative way of doing it.

I've come up with an idea of getting an SMB, cutting the top off (so it become a tube with two open ends) and writing the proposal along it. I can then unravel it underwater, hold the strap at the bottom and and pump air through the (cut) SMB as if I were inflating it. Will this remain 'inflated' (so the message is readable) and also not rip out of my hand?

I'm still open to other ideas if anyone has suggestions they wish to share.

That should work and the SMB will stay upright as long as your are pumping gas in it and depending on currents, may stay up on it's own for a while.

Why not use an unmodified SMB and orally blow a small puff of air inside to unfurl it? I often do that during normal deployment just to make sure everything is untangled before the "big blow" from the regulator.

Have you considered something more discrete if she said no?

Not sure I could trust myself to blow a small puff at the time. Might end up with me at the surface and her saying "oh no" anyway ;).

One of the small SMB's (4 ft) is only a few pounds buoyant, even when filled to its limit.
Just a bit of air in it will straighten it out so you can read what is pre-written on it, and it will be easy to handle.
Don't give her a ring underwater, too easy to drop!

Dump a little air from your wing into a functional dsmb and your buoyancy won't change. No adjustments needed.
Cut her loose if there is a problem but don't wreck your dsmb, your gonna need it!

I did the dive slate on the arm with the 3rd grade "Yes/No" checkboxes and carried the ring on a night dive. We were near the sand bottom so no worries about losing a fumble. SMB sounds like a good idea - just make sure it can be read for the photo - you'll want that to be good. I second leaving it intact and doing the small puff to get it erect - shouldn't need to be fully inflated
