OK, this last weekend I tried both the horizontal ascent and also the oral inflator open on ascent tip. I must say that it made a huge difference!! Also, the oral inflator trick is sooo cool.

Glad to hear it! I keep learning everytime I get wet.

Safe diving,
Chris

What is the best way to make a nice slow controlled ascent.

So what is best? Am I even close on the proper technique?

Here is what I like to do:

purge suit ... leave valve open
purge wing
grab nearby diver
hitch ride

I find they are hardpressed to ascend faster than 30fpm while I am playing remora. ;)

Sorry, I could not resist.

Seriously, "swimming up" is used when it's all turned to crap and you need to ascend under your own power.

"Drifting up" takes practice, practice, practice until monitoring and adjusting is automatic. Then add something new like losing your mask because some chucklehead kicked you in the head, or you need to share gas, etc. Then it's back to practice, practice, practice.

But once it's mastered the feeling, and look, is sweet !!!
