We're taking a flight to Utila (several jumps actually) and wanted to know if anyone has had problems taking a Regulator thru security in Carry On bag? I like to have it with me, but there's alot of new rules now.

No. At my local airport, the TSA folks seldom recognize dive gear on the monitors and want to do hand inspections, but everything goes through. Elsewhere, regs, computers, masks, camera, flashlights and other stuff have never been a problem. Include Roatan, Cozumel, TCI, Bonaire and Curacao.

I fly out of Logan airport in Bostom MA and have never had an issue. I almost always carry my octopus in my carry on. At times they have pulled it out for further inspection, but mostly they recognize it and sometime make the comment "someone's going diving". On the return trip I generally pack it with my checked bags. I do recall traveling back from Curacao just last September and having it in my carry and without incident.
Good luck

I'll ditto the rest - I've flown in and out of all 3 DC area airports with regs, dive computer and steel backplate+wing. They almost always ask, but when I say "diving gear" they accept that. Sometimes they take a quick look, sometimes the chemical residue detector thing gets done. Never a big deal. Usually it's the computer they're most interested in looking at, just 'cause it's a hockey puck looking affair I think.

Jan... you know how I think, and I tell you this has worked for me quite well. To answer your question- sure... everyone (TSA included) knows what a regulator is. But it begs the question- why bother? I have travelled for many many years and have never had my dive gear lost, stolen or damaged from checked baggage.

Pack it well, put three secure labels on your bag with your routing info, check the bags... get on the plane.

Carry your prescription mask, and if you are an odd size, maybe carry your 3 mil or polar fleece. Your computer and camera, but check the housing. in the unlikely event of baggage delay, even Utila is advanced enough to have great rentals- and the airline is paying.

Carry whatever you will, but after traveling as much as we have, we just don't want the hassle of the weight and volume of hoses and regulators. Our always arrive on the carrousel- and that has been hundreds of times.

We always carry on our regulators/computers. One TSA official I talked to said that the regs show up black on their monitors. I always tell the screener that there are regs in the bag and already have it unzipped before it goes through X-ray. Half the time they have a look at it and 3/4 of the time they ask me where I will be diving.

Trip 2 weeks ago to Nassau -- Regs in carryon didn't get a second glance leaving out of DCA (National), but got a hand inspection coming back in Nassau.
