Hi everyone,

I am wondering what the latest info is on diving while pregnant? Until what stage of the pregnancy, if at all?

Any info would be appreciated!

Many prior threads on the topic.

Bottom line, Hang up the regulator at the first suspicion. Skin diving id OK.

Our daughter will be two this year. As soon as we found out my fiance was preg the doctor said hang up her gear for the season and actually also told us to keep her out of pools and the ocean due to the bacteria especially near the last few months.

No diving. No studies have been done. Who are they going to test? Actually, I would think the first trimester would be the most critical since a lot of development occurs during this time period. There are quite a few medications that are dangerous during the first trimester that are okay afterwards. I'm not saying okay to dive in 2nd and 3rd trimesters. As has been said, hang up the regs for 9 months. It ain't happenin', at least not safely.

I had a student who was pregnant. I believe it was the DAN site that said no diving after the first trimester. I encouraged her to come back after the baby was born, why take chances, she agreed.

If you suspect you are pregnant, you shouldn't be diving. Get early prenatal care, don't smoke, eat well and take care of yourself. You are making a human being who may be the one taking care of you when you grow old.

I like to think of it this way: Imagine microbubbles in micro circulation.

Actually some very old info is quite appropriate now. Early in the last century pregnant goats and sheep were subjected to hyperbaric exposures. The fetuses were bent. There is no direct blood flow between mom and baby. Net result is the mom can offgas efficiently while the fetus can not. Plus remember the unborn child has no working pulmonary/lung system to get rid of the absorbed gas from a hyperbaric exposure.
Very simple: If you think you are pregnant DO NOT DIVE.
