It's great to find this forum, with its many newbie and experienced divers.

I start scuba certification class in one week. And then I'm going on my first diving trip over the Thanksgiving holidays, to Manzanillo, Mexico. I'm both nervous and confident. Beyond the Mexico trip, I have no idea what scuba diving I'll do. I don't even know where Utahns can go for near-by, interesting dives. (I do know about a recent, well-publicized case of two brothers who foolishly decided to scuba dive down through a huge culvert of a near-by canal and never returned alive.)

I'm doing my scuba classes with my two sons, so I look forward to future dives with them.

And welcome to the Party Line...

:oldguy: You're about my age, but don't worry - better late than never. Just plan on a Nitrox follow-up course, so you can use the Enriched Stuff! :thumb:

I can guarantee (money back and everything) only one thing with this scuba diving thing. YOU'LL BE SOOOOOOO HOOKED. You have no idea what you are gettin' yourself into. Your brain, your heart (and your wallet:D ) won' be able to process anything else.
Just dive safe ........and have all the fun on the face of the earth. Anyways, you'll have no choice.

You are going to have a great time. Before I actually got into the water I was only so-so in the idea of SCUBA diving. From the second I got wet I was hooked and never looked back. The best thing you could do If this is something you really want to do is buy your own gear. The reasoning is if you have your own gear you will dive more often and there for remain more interested and motivated. Go for it, you won't regret it. Remember the two most important rules of SCUBA 1. Never ever hold your breath and 2. Have fun!

Thanks for your kind words and encouragement. I'm looking forward to the adventure. How much I stick with scuba diving depends on how much my two sons stick with it. If they get their own gear, plan diving trips, etc., I'll do the same. The son who encouraged me to talke these lessons and to go diving in Mexico next month will probably want to make it a major hobby, so it will become a major hobby for me, too.

I have to agree with bebo....

I've been certified for a little over a month...got 9 dives with 10 more planned for our "vacation" starting this week...and its ALL we seem to think/talk about. We are not even dry from one dive before we're asking where our next one will be.

Just be prepared. I hope your son's do get into it! Its wonderful!!!
