I'm a Fish!
I went out to the coast today with the wife, kid and dog. We went to Portugese Beach.
The water was really clear for that section of coastline it seemed. I could see through the breaking waves and I also could see rocks underwater. The water was a beautiful emerald color.
I noted that the waves at Portugese Beach are very similar to Monastery with that steep gravel washing machine action and probably a drop off, but is no submarine canyon right off shore from Portugese Beach. I would imagine that the deepest you could find with a moderate surface swim would be 40 feet maybe.
After we walk back up to the car I decided to walk out to the point and I noticed a small rocky protected cove just South of the point and completely protected from the relentless pounding of the swell. I went down the little path that has been carved in by thousands of tourists and realized that this decent and acsent out of the entry/ exit point really wouldn't be that bad.
I think it needs to be dove. It looks like a great crab grabbing spot and may even house a few good size lings. There might even be the possibility of decent abs for a quick meat run.
Who wants to join me for an exploration dive.
Any takers?
How 'bout next weekend if the conditions are good?

Hey zky
I'm up for it always like to find new paces to dive. Just let me know when is good for you.

ZKY,

I can't make it this week end, but I'm free for the following weekend. A glance at the swell models seem to show this weekend as being not so good.

We need to go catch some more fish!

Yeah I was looking at the swell model for the weekend also and I think I may work at the harbor instead.
Let's shoot for the following weekend.
This will also give people more time to plan for it.

Sounds good. So I have two questions, one if the conditions are right, should we try Arena Rock? Two, if we did do Portuguese Beach, we might want to have someone on shore with a throw rope. The undercurrent there could be a serious issue.

I'll contact you privately about Arena Rock, that by the way is coming up soon.
Concerning the entry exit point that I saw at Portugese Beach, it is actually south of the point that would end the south end of Portugese Beach. North of the point/promintory is the actual beach with the nasty under wash. The small little cove I'm thinking of going out of is pretty well protected. It may not be classified as "Portugese Beach" but maybe we'll call it "Portugese Cove South".
I saw some wash rocks out a ways that might be interesting, but like I said, I think it is going to be a somewhat shallow dive. There may be some hidden reefs that come up out of the sand that might be cool similar to the ones south out of Bodega down around Elephant Rock or Bird Rock.

I'm still alive and listening. Unfortunately, or fortunately for the wallet, I have been too swamped with making money to get much time to dive, I am giving up a monterey trip this weekend in search of some more fundage.
