The local newspaper here(can't remember if it was a Baldwin County or Mobile Register...) just had an article on what could possibly be a Possum Pipefish found in Grand Bay which is near the AL/MS border. Apparently its a fairly rare fish thats being looked at for the endangered list. A reporter found it earlier this year and took a picture of it then released it unharmed and the photograph is getting alot of attention as the Marine Bio places around here are suprised of what they think its identity is... This species of pipefish hasn't been found in our waters since the 1960s so they are looking to find more specimens to get a positive ID and work on starting to protect the habitat for it. According to the article, the only other place these fish are reproducing is in East FL near Indian River where they can keep warm in spring water during the winter months. Grand Bay stays at a fairly constant temp throughout the year from springs as well which is another reason they are convinced this species of pipefish could very well be in our waters.

Just thought it was interesting :)
