Tell them you'll buy it, but they have to ship it UPS - COD.

You would need to do it at the mail server. You can't just block Nigeria because they actually use accounts from mail systems all over the world.

I'm running Postfix with Amavis, Greylist Daemon, SpamAssassin, FuzzyOCR plugin (to catch image spam), Razor, SpamCop and NJABL blacklists, and haven't seen a scam in months.

The way most of these scams go:

  • You get a second bidder mail
  • You respond
  • You don't check the seller for "real" feedback
  • You provide your active e-mail address and your phone number
  • You agree on a price and delivery method
  • You are asked to go to Western Union and send the money

From here it can go one of two ways:
  1. You send the money and you will never hear from the seller again (or ever see the item you bought)
  2. You become suspicious and begin asking more questions, at which point you will be inundated with phone calls and e-mails telling you that they a.- they desperately need the money to pay for a relative's surgery / life threatening procedure or b.- they "know" people that can obtain payment on their behalf (thug tactics)

The scams are mostly referred as Nigerian 409's for the law in that country making these scams illegal. Google this: "nigerian 409 scam"

Disclaimer: Not all scams come out of Nigeria, but it seems that there is a pretty solid infrastructure in place over there that encourages these scams

Buyer Beware :cop_2:

Nope . . . you verify the contents of the shipment before you let the UPS guy leave. If it's not what you ordered/payed for, you refuse shipment.

Even if the good are delivered, it could still be a scam. It could be that the reneging bidder is working with the seller to jack up the price. There are too many ways for things like this to go wrong.

I had this happen with a BP/W I recently sold. The winning bidder was from HI. The next one was a guy I know personally.

After the auction ended, he got an email saying that the winner backed out & as 2nd place bidder, he could still buy it. of course, the email did not appear to be from me, so he shot me a line & asked about it. He was contacted by at least 2 different emails (may have been the same person/group, but appeared to be different) offering to sell him my gear, LOL.

He turned it all over to ebay, but so far as I know they never bothered to reply to him about it.

i emailed a guy about a dry suit trough ebay and didnt have time to bid because i was going to wait till last min i wasnt home to bid. the guy emailed me and asked if i was still interested i emailed him back yes. we went though paypal for payment and didnt go though ebay for sale. i wouldnt recommend it to everyone but the guy was a really good seller some things went wrong because it was coming from canada and filled out wrong papers for coming over bored. so he refunder my money untill i got it then i paid for the suit. it now my favorit dry suit. i have it just goes to show there are still good people out there not everyone is bad

I suppose I should clarify, My 2nd chance was sent to me through E-bay. It was not an email outside E-bay. If that was the case I would have never touched it.

Still be careful! Even if the email came from eBay, make sure that the transaction is made through eBay (PayPal), If it's not, you don't have any protection. If you must pay for an eBay auction with a money order, Make sure that it's a Postal Money order. If you don't get your gear, accuse them of Mail Fraud (felony!). Usually enough to scared most people into sending what they owe you.

Be safe!
