Hi,
A buddy and I have been thinking about getting a Poseidon Jetstream / Odin reg and we are pretty confused about whats the truth and whats opinion.

We'd like to know:

<snip>

*Is it true that the 2nd stage is 'fussy' to tune?
[/quote]

Fussy? That's relative. You can make it work and even breathe easy but getting rid of the shudder in shallow water is apparently a game for the exceedingly patient. You need to see shallow water shudder (or chatter) as normal for these regs.

*Is it true that their are NO working parts IN the 2nd stage?

False. The pilot valve is a working part. However failure of the pilot valve would require abuse that would render any other regulator useless too. The Poseidon's are upstream valves which are their most interesting and significant difference from other 2nd stages. The 1st stage is a run-of-the-mill diaphragm.

*Do they actually breathe ANY better than, say, a decent Apek's or SP reg?

No. If you ask me the top of the line Aqualung is the best reg on the market at the moment. The Apeks despite being an excellent reg doesn't measure up to the Legend LX Supreme in terms of ease of breathing or dryness. The top of the line SP is also better than the Apeks in terms of work of breathing but SP's latest regs are more full of O-rings than the space-shuttle, which 'didn't appeal to me. YYMV,

Hey Diver0001,

Dont want to bust your bubble, but do you know who makes the Aqualung Legend LX for Aqualung???

Yes, you guessed it: APEKS!!!!!!!!

Thats right ladies and gentlemen, that is an APEKS reg just a little disguised and reboxed...

SO, your claims:

The Apeks despite being an excellent reg doesn't measure up to the Legend LX Supreme in terms of ease of breathing or dryness

Aren't too valid at all.

Lubold-
you have failed to enlighten me on anything. Breathing is (and should be) an intuitive act for any living human being. I dont want a reg that I have to "learn" to breathe. As for all the technobabble- I am a repair tech for all 3 brands, and I have been turning wrenches on them for close to 10 years now, so......

I'll stick with SP and Apeks, and you can have all the Posiedons you want.

I'll go along with that to a point. The 1st stages are mechanically identical. The 2nd stages work the same way but the design of the housing is slightly different. What I've found (and I have used both) is that that the Aqualung (a) breathes lighter and (b) is drier, especially upside down.

Try them both. You'll be surprised. I was. I wasn't expecting to notice any difference either for the reasons you mentioned but in fact the difference is pronounced.

And actually it doesn't interest me very much if it's an Apeks reg with an Aqualung stamp on it. Aqualung owns Apeks so it's not a big surprise that they bundle their talents.

Your comment regarding my gender is completely uncalled for.
Can I call ya and make a few comments about your gender? :D

YOUR coments are ALWAYS welcome, darrrrrlin'.

Gedunk- the issue with the failure was this (if memory serves, this was back in '94)- it failed closed, we couldn't figureout why it failed at all, until someone figured out that the tank valve was partially closed (we had been doing valve drills). That was the only explanation we were ever able to come up with- it worked just fine on subsequent dives (for it's owner- I wouldn't have anything to do with it again).
Yeah i know what you mean. I haven't felt the same about my AGA mask since it did that to me either. Funny how ones confidence in equipment wanes when you lose your air source at depth.

I'm not defending some of the things others have said to you on this thread (the poster in question sounds like he is trying to sell magnificant Swedish machines....lol ) but you had to know you would get some responses when you called them crap. As experienced as you are i find it hard to believe you truely believe that.

I smell chum in the water.:) Are you chummin?

I am the store manager of a dive shop, and we sell Aqualung, Oceanic, Mares, Apeks, and yes, POSEIDON regulators.
AND, if you were a customer or not, or if I am just posting on this message board, like I am, I give my honest opinion. I own and use regularly FOUR poseidons. I like them, they breathe well for ME. I work on them myself, and I dont think they are a piece of CRAP... WHICH, by the way, CD, I have never said that any piece of equipment is crap. I actually think SP makes a good reg, but I have two problems with SP... They are mostly piston regs, which I PERSONALLY dont like for COLD water (34 degrees F right now, and going diving on SUNDAY) and, they overprice everything.

Now stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!!

Whatever Chuck. All i can tell you is i own and dive three Poseidon regs and your turning me off man.

We all have opinions and thats great, but chill out, you don't need to push so hard.

Gedunk-

I wasn't "chumming"- you guys should know me well enough by now to know that I am (like most of us here) opinionated, and that I generally don't pull any punches regarding how I feel about things (equipment, procedures, etc.). I don't intend to be offensive, it's just my nature. I don't *Personally* think that Posiedon's are the best regs out there, and I stated that in my own charming way ;) . I don't mind the feedback, but as a professional in the diving industry, I have been dealing with the "little girl you shouldn't be doing this" comments and attitude for over 10 years now, I find it patently offensive and uncalled for. I know a lot of great divers, both male and female, and I know a lot of idiots of both genders as well.

Lubold-

Note- I NEVER criticized you for using (or supporting) YOUR choice of regs. I couldn't care less WHAT you use. However, I felt that your comments were uncalled for and offensive. I appreciate what it's like to work in the industry, I have for the past 10 years. I never asked that you agree with me, simply treat me with the professionalism and respect that I am sure you wish to be treated with.
